Re: camera magazine

I just flick through them in the newsagent and buy the one that seems to have the most interesting features/articles.
There seems to be a lot of replication between the titles so I suppose sticking to just one wouldn't hurt.

Re: camera magazine

I had the same dilemma recently when i bought a 400D, and so went out and bought 3.
Digital Photography
Digital SLR Photography
Digital SLR User.

I found Digital Photography the best by far. Its not aimed at pros as much as the other 2. The last 2 are a bit too "intense" (sorry probably not the best description) whereas DPMag is alot more user friendly.
I also like the DVDs on them, but alot of people dont. If you subscribe you get each issue for just over £4 each.

There are others out there but i found that one the best.

Re: camera magazine

I have just subscribed to AG Magazine it's quarterly and is not cheap at £12.50 an issue but personally I feel that I can get the 'day to day' opinion and reviews off the internet etc. This seems to offer something a little different to the usual monthly.

Re: camera magazine

£ per page, you would be much better off with a good book as a guide when starting out, rather than a magazine.

Re: camera magazine

I read most of them (I have to park outside my kids school 30min before they come out to get a space, so its ideal magazine reading time ) and the only one I subscribe to is Photography Monthly. The others I will buy if there are features that interest me. An American friend asks me to forward Digital Camera mag, so I usually get that one which is also pretty good.

They all have different specialities so try and narrow down your interests and read a few from your local library till you can decide which one is best for you.

Its true a book is probably better for the "basics" but the mags give you up to date info on new products, events and exhibitions plus lots of reader photos (which personally), I learn quite a bit from.

Re: camera magazine

If you get into photo manipulation with Photoshop as you might well do after time, I find “Digital Photo” is a good magazine and comes with a tutorial disk every month!

Re: camera magazine

I'm going to go out tomorrow and buy a couple of the mags recommended here. I can take some good shots but when I try PP on the RAW files they usually end up looking artificial. Need some help in the photoshop dept. methinks.

Re: camera magazine

Like most of us I've bought and read just about every photo mag going but in the last year or so I've really cut back on the mags I buy and have whittled it down to three.

Digital Camera Magazine: In truth the main reason I buy it is because I like the amount of reader involvement in it i.e. there are loads of oppurtunities to get your photo published, which I've been luck enough to do 3 or 4 times. It's also the only mag I subscribe to but in truth the only reason I'm still subscribed to it is because I keep forgetting to cancel it. It's not a bad mag but it is a little too simplistic for me.

Practical Photography: If you want to know how to take better photographs than this is the mag you should buy. I havent yet subscribed to it but that's only because I keep holding out for a decent subscription gift . This is really the only mag I read from cover to cover every issue and I buy every issue.

Digital Photo: The sister magazine of Practical Photography. I personally think that these two mags make an unbeatable combination as although Digital Photo does have some good technique articles it really excells at the Photoshop side of things. Again the only reason I haven't yet subscribed to this mag is because I keep holding out for a decent subscription gift . Although I may not read it cover to cover I read 90% of it and buy every issue.

Re: camera magazine

I really like Digital SLR Photography (http://digitalslrphoto.com/). It's a newish mag (6 or 7 editions old) and it's specifically for Digital SLR users. They have a good beginners guide section which has focussed (sorry) on a specific topic each month, plus reviews, pro-advice, a piece each month about 'digital converts' or pros who have moved from film to digital and how they've adapted....

I really like it although the proof reading could be a little more thorough!
