A Trip out, on a Dull Day . . .

Took a trip out to Bodiam Castle yesterday, but the skies were filled with bland fluffy white/grey colours, leaving very flat looking light

Wasn't in the most photographic mood either, but snapped and processed some of what I grabbed, here are some of the better ones...

1. Welcome to . . .

2. Cow Over the Edge

3. Castle Entrance

4. Framed by Foliage

5. Just a Padlock

6. Old Steam Train

A few black and white conversions....

7. Side of the Castle

8. Here comes the Train

9. Steam Train - A Closer Look

It was my first time out with my Cokin filter system which I used on some of the shots to try and create a more glass like water surface, learn't that you definitely have to be careful when stacking them (due to colour tinges) and also keep an eye out for rain droplets on them

Cheers,

Giz

#2 is brilliant. Absolutely love it. What a capture.

3, 7 and 8 are also nice but I'm not a fan of the HDR treatment that gives the castle's walls a funny look. The trains smoke in 8 also looks too processed for me. They'd be gorgeous (to me) otherwise.

Cheers for the comments all

Here are 3 variations of the Castle Entrance shot, not to fuel a I Love/Hate HDR discussion, just to show some different takes. I'm actually quite liking the HDR to B&W look at the moment, takes away a bit of the un-realness, but leaves a detailed and textured B&W result . . . . imo

The Castle Entrance - Variations

1. Real

2. HDR'd

3. HDR to B&W

Re: A Trip out, on a Dull Day . . .

The cow shot is great. Sometimes there's just no substitute for being in the right place at the right time.
Despite not being a massive fan of HDR, I think your treatment of the castle looks smart and does add something extra. Not a bad original either though, especially for a dull day. Out of interest, how many shots make up those pics?
#8 is one I'd like to see in colour though. There's not a great amount of contrast around the front of the engine and so looks a bit flat. Just wondering if the colour would give it some punctuation.

Re: A Trip out, on a Dull Day . . .

I know the feeling Gizmo, I went out to a few places on Saturday, the sky was grey but I managed to get a few shots off, will put them up in a bit.

#4 & #5 are my favs, the natural framing is on 4 ace - well spotted and well executed

You did well considering the conditions mate.
