EOS 350D - Software

I think I'm going mad.

I have an IXUS500 and an EOS 350D and would like a common application to down load my pictures direct from both cameras. I did have ZoomBrowser ver 5.6 loaded but this would only recognise the IXUS500. So I went on to Canon's web site and found ver 5.8 EX. So while I was waiting for that to download I slipped the disk I received with the 350D in to my PC and loaded 5.5 EX which recognised my 350D. Thinking that ver 5.8 must be an improvement I loaded that and I can't see my 350D again.

So which software and version is the best to interface directly to both my IXUS500 and 350D. Is ZoomBrowser the best, I do like the way it puts the pictures in to folders according to the date they were taken.

Re: EOS 350D - Software

OK, I have reverted back to ver 5.5 and it still does not recognise my 350D. So I tried my laptop which has ver 5.7 and this works fine. Where am I going wrong with my desktp PC.

Re: EOS 350D - Software

Does 5.5 recognise both cameras? You say it recognised the 350D when you reinstalled it but doesn't now you've gone back to it after v5.8. What about the IXUS?
Have you tried updating the firmware on the 350D? I wonder if it could be an incompatibility issue between latest Zoombrowser and older firmware.
All guesses though .

A card reader might be the answer.

Absolutely...

Whilst I heartily recommend DPP for RAW workflow ( Ver 2.2 is ace) and Zoombrowser for.. browsing or using its integrated Raw Image task.

For downloading I would always go for a standalone USB card reader.

Apart from being much faster, non camera specific, not needing drivers it is also possible to use Any version of Zoom browser to catalogue images downloaded from it
For transfer of images from Camera to PC .. I would lose the need for software.

If you have more than one card you can keep shooting while, say downloading one onto a laptop or PC without involving the camera or requiring it to have a well charged battery

It is not Zoom Browser that provides camera detection or manages the downloads. The camera drivers and download/manager software are different for the 350D and the Ixus 500. Both must be installed from their respective installation discs, and then updated with all the latest web updates.

For the 350D it is the Canon Camera WIA Driver (350D version) and the EOS Utility which then open ZoomBrowser. ZoomBrowser 5.8b requires EOS Utility Updater 2.0 to be installed and if you have not already done so update to EOS Capture 1.5.0 and the Canon Camera WIA Driver to 5.6.0. I suspect that EOS Utility and Zoom Browser are out-of-step.

For the Ixus 500 it is Canon Camera WIA Driver (Ixus 500 version) and Canon Camera Window that control and manage the dowloads. It would be wise to check that you are using the latest Canon Camera WIA Driver for the Ixus 500 - 6.2.5 R4. I don't believe there is an update for Canon Camera Window

ZoomBrowser 5.8b is really a Vista version, although XP is supported. When used under XP you will probably find that it generates system errors in the Windows Event Log, although these errors do not effect its operation. When used with Vista there are no errors.

Re: EOS 350D - Software

Thanks JefUK, you were spot on. I have reverted to ver 5.7 and loaded the latest EOS Utility and all seems fine now. I still need to check that I am fully up to date for drivers and utilities on both PC's and then I should have two stable systems.

Re: EOS 350D - Software

Adobe Lightroom picks up both my Canon 30D and my Panasonic TZ3, and launches automatically as soon as I plug them in. Might be worth trying the 30-day demo.
