Question Looking for suggestions on new Digital Camera

As the header says I'm looking for advice on buying a new Digital camera. At present I own a Canon Powershot A300 which is getting on a bit. Looking to upgrade in the near future with a budget of around €300 so I need some input.

A friend has re-commended the following

http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=335185

But I would like a few opinions / other options. I have been looking and other Canon Powershots & Sony Cybershots.

My requirements of the camera are that its fairly straight forward to use and takes good quality pictures, nothing too fancy but with the right amount of functionality for an amateur to use. If possible an online supplier suggestion would be appreciated as well.

Thanks in advance for suggestions

You cannot go wrong with another Canon . I've just recently bought the A630 and is a smashing camera for the money .We use the A610 at work and was always impressed with it's picture quality. The A630 has 21 different picture taking modes , auto or manual settings and looks good too . Of course , there is quite a few other models in the new Canon range . Check them out at the Canon site . As far as buying on-line I would recommend ebuyer or amazon . Mine came from ebuyer ,bought on a Thursday morning , delivered next day on a friday afternoon.

Went for the Canon A630 in the end.

Picked up Camera and bundle of extras which included 2gb SD card, bag, charger, batteries & tripod for £140 sterling on Ebay. The additional cost of shipping & insurance was £25, a total of 165 which in my opinion wasn't too bad a deal. looking forward to playing with the new toy when it arrives

Re: Looking for suggestions on new Digital Camera

Sounds like a good deal , less than what I paid , although I was hoping for my £50 Canon refund . I bought 2 SD cards from amazon and am well pleased with my new toy.

Re: Looking for suggestions on new Digital Camera

I have literally just purchased (yet another) digital camera, which arrived today. It was just too good a deal to pass by.

Bought from www.buyacamera.co.uk the Canon A640 is £176.99 or the A630 is £136.99

Take off the £60 or £50 rebate from Canon (respectively) for those 2 and you can see why I couldnt pass it by.

The 10mp A640 for £116.99 is a price that nothing remotely comes near in terms of price and spec.

It is a little bulkier than some, but its still very small and actually feels comfortable in the hand. (ie no delicate fiddley holding that you get in the micro sized cameras.) The grip is exactly that - and much better IMHO.

For a review, have a look at "steves digicams"

10 mega pixels is rediculously high - so if you can scrape by with 8mp the A630 for £86 after rebate is also a superb option.

BTW - if you use the company I have listed (I have no connection) you can also purchase an extended warrenty for £4.99. I didnt though because my Visa card gives me this for free!

But.... Get in quick. The cashback offer from Canon is this bank holiday weekend only.....

Thats a shame I didnt see this thread earlier - I would always be a bit wary of buying from ebay - particularly if something went wrong and needed a repair!

You could have got this for £86 (inc rebate) from www.buyacamera.co.uk and about £12 for a 2GB card from ebuyer (for example).

Oh well!

Touch wood there will be no issues. I made a saving on what the price is over here in Ireland so its worth the risk.

Thanks for you input
