canon 400d lens ?

Hi

I am after a telephoto lens for my canon 400d i have about £200 to spend (could go a bit more if its worth it|) so one stop is on my list for a saving!

I have a list below what would people say is the one to go for and why?

I will be using outside for pier and harbours shots so dont want anything too heavy as could have to do a bit of walkin!!

Also i need to put filters on my lenses for protection more than anything wot does the job?

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens

Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 DG Macro Lens

Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Lens

Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens

Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Asph. (IF) Macro Lens

Tamron AF 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 XR Di Aspherical (IF) Macro Lens

Thanks shane

From that list I'd say the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens would be a very good lens to get. You get good results from it and it's cheap as well

Although I've just bought the 70-300IS from kerso but thats around £315 inc cashback so a bit over budget for you

Re: canon 400d lens ?

Hi ya

Not used any of the others lens, but in the end I went with the Sigma 70-300 apo.

There are loads of threads about this lens and a quick search will bring them up.

Cheers Holo

Re: canon 400d lens ?

Ok thanks so far

Are there any others worth thinking about?

And is a start point of 70mm to high, or for wide should i also look at maybe something like!!Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Lens later?

Any help with the filters?

Re: canon 400d lens ?

I would agree that for less than £200 the Sigma from Onestop for £116 takes some beating. I've been using it for 2 weeks now (about 800 photos) and while I'm not completely blown away (like I was with the 50mm f/1.8) it is obviously a solid lens and amazing value.

Most of the others that you list come off much worse in tests and some feel much worse when I had a quick play in the shop.

If you want to budget more, then IS would definitely be only my list of priorities as about half of those 800 photos have been binned because of camera shake

As for filters - you could order one of these at the same time:
http://www.onestop-digital.com/catal...roducts_id=294
It's the best out there.
Or for a bit less there's this
http://www.onestop-digital.com/catal...roducts_id=139

You can just leave these on all the time.
I wouldn't get a polarizer to leave on all the time for this lens, because the front section rotates during auto-focus (most annoying).

Re: other lenses to partner it. I'm just going to keep my kit lens for a while and get used to it. The other two I'm thinking of is the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
http://www.onestop-digital.com/catal...hp?cPath=24_29

Or if I suddenly come into money - the Canon 17-55 IS f/2.8
http://www.onestop-digital.com/catal...roducts_id=341

I don't mean to come off sounding like an advert for Onestop, so you should way up warranty, proximity (they're in Hong Kong), price etc before jumping in.
