Just got a new 2000mm lens!

It's an f10 2000mm lens with an objective lens diameter of 8". No question of hand holding this baby as it weighs in at just over 50lbs. It's attached to a 30D with a T-mount and Canon EOS adapter.

Re: Just got a new 2000mm lens!

Don't forget the 1.6X crop factor on your 30D which will give you a focal length of 3200mm
My father has a Celestron 8" SCT which is the same focal length as your Meade. Looking at your set-up, I think he has a T-adapter but I'm not sure if it's the right size to fit a Canon EOS T-ring. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your adapter and ring from? I was thinking of ordering from telescopeplanet but wasn't sure exactly what I needed to get altogether.

Re: Just got a new 2000mm lens!

I keep telling my friends that AVF isn't just about blokes comparing the size of their lenses.....but having said that, that is certainly impressive! The 30D - not a small camera - looks *tiny*compared to your beast!

Telescopeplanet advertise a Canon EOS adapter but it seems to be the film camera mount rather than the digital version. I had to return it and get one from Telescopehouse.
The BC029 fits my 30D/5D and comes in at £16.99. T-mounts are pretty standard.

Thats a great scope, I have the earlier, non gps version, you will be impressed with the photo quality, but its a steep learning curve, heres a shot of Jupiter I took with mine, camera was a Minolta A1. Took me about 2 hours to get this right!

Thanks for the comments Allan. Nice picture.

I've been using an ETX90 for some years but is was not suitable for photography as I was worried the plastic gearing system would be too weak to cope with the weight of a DSLR. Maybe I should have kept my 350D.

I certainly agree with your comment about a steep learning curve. Focussing the camera seems the biggest problem as it has to be done via the camera viewfinder. I have enough trouble with my 100-400 with the 2x extender so this is several orders of magnitude more difficult.

All I need now is some clear night sky. The last few nights have been complete cloud cover and the outlook is not good. I'll try to get some practice in on terrestrial objects.

I didn't think it would be a film camera mount. I've bookmarked the link you've given and will order one from there once I'm ready.
@bibamus, that is a superb shot mate and one that has me a bit more exited about trying some astrophotography

Re: Just got a new 2000mm lens!

I must get an adapter for the Nikon, I havent done any for a while, since I sold the Minolta, but that was threaded onto an eyepiece. I must have taken hundreds of shots to get the exposure right, had lots if vignetting and the shutter, when it went off shook the scope. In the end, I put it on bulb and used a black card over the lens and a stopwatch!
That shot of jupiter was about 50 separate images stacked together with Registax, cropped, and I used a light unsharp mask. All the colours are as natural as my camera would allow, you can see the great red spot and the black dot is a shadow of one of the moons.
I also got some great shots of Saturn Mars and Venus, although Venus is very tricky, I just got a blurred crescent.

To take the strain off the scopes clutch, you really need a set of counterbalance weights ( more expense!) then a remote release for the camera to stop any camera shake.

Good luck with your scope, I look forward to seeing some great shots.

Allan
