My Son....Zak....50mm lens advice please!

Hi all

got given a 25 yr old Nikon SLR with a 50mm f1.4 manual f stop/focus

decided to have a play by snapping it into my D80 (not a great fan of manual focus) and took a couple of snaps of our 3 yr old ....

I like the softness of the colour but the dof is a little shallow

I seem to be taking more and more photos of our 3 kids ...basically what lens
will give me better pics but wont break the bank?

will the 50mm f/1.8 at about £70 do the job?

although to be honest if I have to pay more to get the right lens then so be it

cheers
Trev

I tihnk those are both nice portraits, as you say quite a shallow DoF but if you were shooting at f/1.4 then thats to be expected.
