My HDR attempt Barcelona Harbour

HDR seems to be all the rage and I still can't get the hang of it. Here's an attempt which to date seems to be my best but it still doesn't compare to what's on show on these forums.

I blew the highlights on his pic so they couldn't be recovered but what do you guys think?

Regards
Martin

What weird dark patch??

No, thanks for pointing it out Pete, didn't notice it but my excuse was that, even though I was knackered, I couldn't sleep last night and was messing about with photo's with my eyes half shut from 3am onwards.

Is that better?? TBH, I think I could spend hours dodging and burning it but going to golf soon so I won't bother.

Regards
Martin

Re: My HDR attempt Barcelona Harbour

Sorry, but in my own opinion I don't think the HDR effect works in this shot.

HDR = High Dynamic Range: The jumble and high concentration of masts after the old spice boat are basically blocking out a lot of this 'range'

...and these are the areas of the photo that would normally be enhanced by the HDR effect as you are able to pick out areas of detail in subjects that are far away in the frame.

I think this could be a cracker if your viewpoint was from slightly higher up. Therefore you'd have the water, buildings and boats in the foreground, then the plethora of masts, then the architecture and then the sky.

I think I prefer your B+W shot of this harbour on your flickr page, it just looks a bit too jumbled for HDR.

Sorry!

Thanks for the comments I actually, totally agree with you. I've been looking at this all morning thinking it doesn't work and you have just explained what I couldn't see.

I also prefer the B&W one but I always prefer B&W to colour in the majority of shots anyway.

Thanks again mate.

Regards
Martin

P.S. Don't be sorry, I would rather receive opinions, good or bad, than none at all so that I can try and improve.

Re: My HDR attempt Barcelona Harbour

Got to agree - I think it would look better without HDR. All the masts and lines look v.artificial. It looks like you had plenty of light at the location anyway so HDR shouldn't really be needed.
