D40 ---> D80

Evening All

just a quick question to the Nikon users

although ive only had my D40 a couple of weeks a friend of mine who works in a camera shop has offered me a deal I dont think I can refuse

he's offered to part ex my 40 (for more than I paid for it...) and upgrade to an 80 (also at a price quite considerably lower than Ive seen anywhere)

Im a little scared as Im new to the DSLR thing and dont want to be put off by a camera I may struggle to get results out of

basically guys and girls Ive not had my D40 in auto much since Ive had it and will experiment time and time again

how steep is my learing curve likely to be? and what problems might I come up against?

I thank you

Trev

Re: D40 ---> D80

Do not pause for breath...Just go for it..Now

Dont let the marketing hype get to you about the D40 being better . The D80 equally can be used as a point and shoot with equal "wow" factor

There s no downside to having it and unlike the D200 , its "out of the box" images with a good lens are impressive even if you haven't learn to customise it. You dont need a PhD to learn these cameras
just a bit of time and interest as well as some helpful guidance
Go for it

Re: D40 ---> D80

Sweetgirl (I know you've also just got your D40....to be honest I wish I could afford to keep mine as its awesome )

I had my D40 from fleabay for £320 and will get full uk retail back plus the 80 at cost to the shop....my m8 runs it

to put it this way I couldnt tax my westfield for 12 months for what it going to cost me to change

the main prob Ive had with the 40 is Ive got right into this photography lark and now 'need' (for the continuance of my life!!!) lenses, this was'nt meant to happen....upgraditis has set in bad (bite of the bug variety marks everywhere)

going to do it....see how difficult I was to talk me into it

Re: D40 ---> D80

Trev

I have had my D40 for 2 weeks now and totally hooked. I take the damn thing everywhere. i absolutely love it!!. My boss tried to convience me that the canon was better, but i love the look and feel of the Nikon. Very user friendly.

I too have grown out of the kit lens and am desperately looking for replacements and boy do they cost ££££££, but its got to be done...

need it, want it, NOW....that sort of thing... actually i'm on fleabay now looking for some my husband thinks i have gone mad

So when you picking the D80 up...let me know how it compares to the D40.

Re: D40 ---> D80

My m8's on hols nexy week (so he isnt having it till friday....no DSLR=no chance)
should have the 80 monday night....

I had a feel of the canons but it just wast meant to be (Ive got girly hands....canon owners...bah!)

I feel a little guilty as I fell in love with the D40 and would never want 'more' lenses and if I did I would pay the premium it demanded.....as It goes Ive turn really quickly and gone against what I said the other half and I needed from a camera and now want....no thats not right 'need' more............

Ill be upset next friday but hopefully happy on Monday evening......the leaning curve starts again

D40's rule

Ive seen what you are capable of with the D80 (although this is not entirely down to the camera by any means)

Ive made my mind up already m8....it has to happen..

gotta spit and polish the 40 and rebox it up....its going to be hard as its a dslr first love for me....

been shooting a Canon S3IS P&S. and alittle windfall came our way so got a D80 with 18-200 VR lens,,,Magic m8, the thing I like best is not having to go into menu a lot to change most options.

Just press a button and twirl a wheel,,great,good shooting...Rick

Re: D40 ---> D80

Cheers Alex

My m8 dropped it off in work tonight and Im well impressed
I'll give myself a couple of weeks on this stunning bit of kit (cheers all for the words of 'just do it!') and have a bash once Im able to tell the difference

I went for the 18-70mm lens although I feel if I like your lens and end up buying one it may become unused....

It going to be a bit of a steep learning curve as the amount of extra buttons alone are enough to get me stressed

the only bit that Im struggling to get used to is the size of thumb wheel (the 40 was much bigger)

Oh! well I will take it to work tommorrow and have a bash on the way in and on the way home...

all the best

Trev

I'll be honest with you Anita

.....I havent got a clue yet

A late night at work putting 3 kids to bed and now heroes on the telly......

Im checking this forum and having a quick play during the ad's

pointed it at the other half a few times but dont have anything I would post here yet....

the feel is alot different the small thumb wheel still bothering me although Ill get over it with no probs....the amount this initially is able to do looks a little daunting to say the least

the lens is gorgeous

end of ad's got to go let you know l8r

Re: D40 ---> D80

18-70 lens is a cracker. I had one on my D50 and it produced some cracking photos. I would suggest trying out the 18-200VR before buying. Its a very expensive lens for what it is..... true, the VR helps out a lot whether other lenses would fail, but i found it pretty ordinary optically.

Re: D40 ---> D80

Hi mate,I havent heard about that course and im not sure what level of confidence Id have in the star photographer .It depends on what you want to apply yourself to.Theres loads of courses in the photomags but that focus on all sorts, from wildlife to weddings.I dont think theres anything local though.

If you go on that Star photographers course let me know what it was like.

If theres anything about the D80 I can help you with just shout.
