HELP! 430EX "difficulties"!

Ok, I received my speedlight this week, and have read the instructions from front to back...but I'm still confused!

Should the focal length indicator change as I change my lens' focal length?
Even when I press the "zoom" button, then the +/- buttons, it doesn't change...I'm lost!

Re: HELP! 430EX "difficulties"!

From what I remember of the 580EX (when I rented it) the zoom indicator only changed when the flash was all the way down. In bounce mode (if there was such a thing) the zoom wouldn't change... is this the problem?

I'd be interested to hear what you thing of the flash, it may be the next thing I save up for (other than a circular polariser)

Well I've only used it in full auto mode so far, but it's quick to recycle, the results look lovely and natural.

And weirdly, with it on, I feel much more pro!

I have my 430 on Manual, and when I zoom in and out it doesn't change unless I half press the shutter release to focus. After that, if I zoom in and out, the flash does too, and you see the change on the LCD.

Mine seems to just stay at 14mm, no matter what i do!

Thing is, I don't have a lens that's as wide as 14mm!

Re: HELP! 430EX "difficulties"!

Has the 430EX got a wide-angle flap that comes down out of the front over the front of the flash. If that's down it'll always stay at 14mm, so push it back in.

It stays at 14mm even when the wide angle diffuser thing is up and retracted...

Re: HELP! 430EX "difficulties"!

OK I solved it, the wide angle diffuser wasn't popping all the way back, so even when I thought it was back, the unit didn't.
