Nikon D80 TTL flash question

I've used Nikon film cameras for years, have loads of lenses and flash equipment but am about to bow to the inevitable and go digital, probably with a D80 (although the d200 does seem to catch my eye).

I know all about lens compatibility, no problems there, but my question is about the flash compatibility of old flashguns with the new cameras. I do understand that the i TTL system is very good but what I want to know is whether the flahguns that work in TTL mode on my Nikon (film) F100 will work on a D80 or not. I've asked in a few shops and have had answers that vary from 'yes - no problem' to 'no, it could fry your camera'. I think the last answer is wrong and only applies to very old circa 1970's guns with much higher trigger voltages. Mine are very recent they are probably amongst the last of the pre iTTL guns.

If the answer is that I can use the old ones then the £200 saved on a new gun could go towards a D200 rather than a D80! Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Nikon D80 TTL flash question

Hi,

This site might be useful

http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html

checked the Nissin 360TW with a meter and it certainly matches up. Tried it on the D80 and it works wonderfully, but you do need to set the apeture and speed yourself as it is not a fully automatic one. So I would guess any receint Nikon flash should be fine, but worth checking first.
