A little snow in Aberystwyth

Work closed early because of the snow... crazy really, it had mostly melted!

Anyway, thought I would use the extra time off to go to the beach and try and catch the starlings roosting under the pier. When I made the nightscapes they made so much noise, I thought it would be fun to try and catch them having their pre-sleep fly.

EXIF should be emedded

Not very happy with the results, just looks like the dirt on the sensor.. i'll try again some other time.

This chap was taking a rest while the sky was busy

The snow (what was left of it) along the beach

Aber's students make some fairly hopless snow/sand men

I love the soft light you get when it snows, has a unique colour to it.

Re: A little snow in Aberystwyth

Went for a quick drive up to the hills behind my house to make some more photographs after the latest flurry of snow. EXIF emebdded

This is as far as I dared go... it was almost too far in the end.

Tried a minimalist black and white style shot

You can have it!

Tree

I wonder if we'll have any more this year??

I like the bokeh on the gull shot (it's showing f/0.0 for me so no wonder it's so milky!) .
Lovely contrast of colours on the third picture, the buildings show up really well in the background .
The sixth shot is simply beautiful

No, it's as it came out of the camera.

It was shot at F4. The reason it shows as f0.0 is because it's an ancient 200mm F4 nikkon AIS lens. It's not a bad lens really, but you dont have any metering or auto focus - so it's manual all the way. Not to bad once you get used to it, I just take a rough guess at the exposure and fire away.

Re: A little snow in Aberystwyth

The Shots all came out well

. We had well over 7 inches of snow at dawn ( and it carried on ) but it was so slippery , I almost slipped and simply gave up taking anything very quickly

Understatement of the year, it's a fantastic bit of glass

It doesn't have the impact of the black and white shot in composition terms and it does appear to have a bit of noise mid-image. Still a nice shot though and the line of the ground is nice.

The first and third shots have very nice colours and processing, i'd be interested what you did as they do appear to have a HDR look to them.

I fiddled a little in rawshooter, balancing out the sky and foreground, then popped them into photoshop, did a little selective levels adjustments to add a little punch. The colour is pretty much as it came out of the camera.

For the starlings shot I did use the burn tool to bring the sky down a little. It's an amazing sight seeing thousands of birds flying around the pier, i'm just not sure how to capture it without making it look like a load of black dots.

"Tried a minimalist black and white style shot"

Tried and succeeded, I'd say.

That minimalist black and white style shot is my favourite. Excellent pic.
