first pics with new sigma 12-24

Here is a picture taken a couple of weeks ago with my new 12-24. The shot in the cathedral (which was rather dark) was taken hand held at ISO 3200. No noise reduction applied.

Unfortunately image is heavily compressed to meet forum requirements. My other images will need further resizing as they still exceed file size despite being less than 800 wide.

Nicely done. Looks pretty sharp given the high iso. You must be pretty happy with the lens.

445 at Jessops. I've seen it online for only a little less. Most reviews still rate the tokina 12-24 as the best value UWA, but the sigma is the only one that will work on a FF sensor camera, should, I mean, when the upgrade happens!

Right, here are a few taken outdoors but in really dismal weather!

By the way, I have some city nightscapes taken with the same lens. If I post some here and then decide to enter one in the competition, would that be considered cheating or illegal?

No ( I dont think so anyhow) but if you think it worthy post it there anyway .It will still get seen

I went for the Tokina ( only 2 days ago as it happens) as I also have the 30D and 350D .
It is a Very nice lens and I feel even If I buy a FF camera I would still keep one of the APS-C cameras so I don't mind it being none FF.

The Sigma is good ( as your picture shows) but for sheer quality the 10-22 EF-S USM Canon ( also non full frame) trumps the lot

It states a design for Digital but nowhere does it specifically say: APS-C sensor

Carlisle yes, sunny no.

Opinions are divided over the canon 10-22 and sigma 10-20, but both are excellent.

Having used a sigma 10-20, I can confirm that the 12-24 has much less distortion.

Is this in Photomatix or you are playing with AEB, or RAW in APE or Photoshop?

I shot RAW, 2 different exposures. Realised that AEB would've been better as it would eliminate camera movement caused by turning the dial! I suppose that's why you need to just shoot, you live and learn! I then used photomatix basic and pretty much left everything on auto. Then took the file into photoshop CS2, corrected perspective a bit and gave it a touch of USM. Severely compressed for upload. It's amazing just how much better the tiff file looks.

Re: first pics with new sigma 12-24: The Tokina in comparison

Dood,
Nice to see you are enjoying the Sigma

These are from the Tokina: Nothing as interesting as your Picturesque Carlisle Images Seem kind of tiny and similarly affected by compression

Im similarly wondering about using one or other in the monthly comp but I don't really think they are interesting enough,
Besides the Long hrs at work Ive managed to get a nasty cold from going out every night trying to find "the image"

Here is a (bad) photo taken in September/October 1981 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Joburg is quite a bit further south and at higher altitude than Harare, though. With global warming this might not ever happen again!

I think it came up that way just with AWB. I may have tweaked the saturation in photoshop, can't remember.
