Boxing - 2 FEB 2007. * Warning - Some blood on show *

Covered some boxing.

Have to say that upon arrival, I looked at the 'card' and felt a little uneasy as first batch of fights were effectively kids, all beit called youth as aged ten or over. However, my fears were dispelled when I quickly realised that these 'kids' are tuned fighting machines and I would not want to take one on the bonce from any of 'em.

The latter rounds were aged upto 21 I think and these were fast, furious, visceral and again, I would not want to fight these lads.

Credit to them though. They all know how to fight and were all credits to the clubs for which they fought, of which the last sequence indicate the power on show.

To be honest, the hardest thing about tonight was the light in that they had two forms on the ceiling. One strip and one concealed by a cover which gave a cast. Should have shot in RAW but did not get around to it, but fine enough with some PP.

Is there a Green Hill far way?

Kind of makes me think their pads should cover their entire head - with eye-slits maybe.

I do like the one with the P&S in frame.

Nice captures but none of them stun me. I think I'm comparing these to your other 'fight night' (?) shots that you posted not too long ago. These ones don't have as much atmosphere - the tiled ceilings look like a Casualty unit. Probably not far off the mark. (I'd hope there is one handy for this anyway.)

Dont get the first bit but I concur about the ceiling. Hardly Las Vegas title fight time.....

As for the comparison - yep, fair enough, but different light = different results and and it is all about how you manage that, not the action. That said, cant do a lot when you are shooting through the ropes and up.

'Green Hill' logos - crappy & tenuous on my part sorry!
Put that down to my own ignorance and inability to express myself properly.

These are vivid. Shots like this really make me wonder why parents allow their kids to join boxing clubs when they could do something less harmful to (themselves and) others like rock-climbing, where they would learn valuable skills like rationalising risks.

Plenty scope for photos in rock climbing too

It is a valid point, but I think I disagree here. These lads are off the streets learning a craft with respect, training and it will help them become better adults, as long as they stay decent. Lots of respect in there tonight, which is evident in most sport - aside from football imo.

PS - re green hill - and so the penny drops!

You are quite right Pete, but bashing each other's skulls - albeit in a controlled environment - is an extreme method of keeping them off the streets... and I'm unsure of the virtues it instills in them.

True enough. Bit like the old prison chestnut in that it makes them better criminals. Likewise this makes them better fighters, but hopefully gives them the chance to control it and walk away if trouble ever occured.

Once again tonight reminded me that you never ever know who you are messing with, in that some of these lads are tiny but well, hard as nails.

Glad I am not someone who goes out looking for a fight every weekend.

You are quite right in that they not only teach them how to fight but how to control their anger and how best to keep themselves out of the line of punches. Some damn fine shots in there and I certainly could feel the atmosphere

Looked to be alot of blood flying about I do like the P&S shot, like a candid shot on their night

Pete excellent images, it brings back all the fun I had when I would do the old boxing....Shame photos dont have smells! Nothing more than a stale gym and the smell of old canvas.

I do like these images better that the others as the others looked a bit staged but still excellent. Also credit to you to have the guts to take this images in front of these kids/blokes. A few eyes must have been looking at your equipment.!

My fav is this. The look on the face on the right compared to the left excellent!!!!

Title: Good night with my left hook!

Thanks. Gear was safe enough but only took one body and a 50mm 1.4 to ebb on the safe side.

Re: Boxing - 2 FEB 2007. * Warning - Some blood on show *

This reminded me of my school days doing boxing on Friday after school. In a not great way. I could feel the pain in the faces of some of those boys as their opponent makes contact square in the face. Ouch.....

Although they arent in the vein of the fight club sequences Pete did I still like the documentary style of these and there are some cracking images here.

Great pictures. I like the one of someone else taking a picture.

He must have hit him hard to break his nose like that.
