just ordered a Canon 17-55f/2.8, need a hood

Anyone know where i can get one cheap. They go for around £40-45 but i dont really want to pay that as once i get P&P on top its looking rather expensive.
Any one know if i can use my 24-105L hood?

What size hood does it take mate? Some of the genuine ones are flower style and some are just huge tunnel types. The one from my 100mm macro blocks out so much light it's useless LOL

one uses EW83J and one uses EW83H.
Not really looked in to them but i thought they might be close enough but of course Canon wouldn't make life that easy.

Cheers

It's a 77mm filter thread which is the same as the 24-105, so you should be able to mount it. Not sure if you will experience any vignetting at the wider end though.

You planning on replacing the Tamron with this Dave?

edit: actually, looking around it appears that it probably won't fit.........gotta love Canon at times!

Re: just ordered a Canon 17-55f/2.8, need a hood

Thanks Steve. ill post tomorrow if it works. I have a feeling it will give me dark corners though. i dont really want o use a hood as the lens is big enough already, especially compared to the Tamron but as ill be out in the bright sun with it i guess it makes sense. I will be sharing my Hoya pro1 UV between the tow lens's but will most probably keep it on the 17-55f/2.8 most of the time as its my new toy.

Yeah, I love the Tamron but i find i also switch to the 24-105L for the IS so this way im hoping to not need to switch so much. Plus we are off the Disney World next month and i know ill be in and out all the time on im hoping the 17-55f/2.8 will get me some decent indoor shots as well as outside.
I still dont feel at ease with only 55mm max but i will have the 24-105L as well.
I hoping these two will do for 99% of the shots and ill also have my 50mm f/1.4 for fast speed indoor shots.

WOW - £45 for the hood - I thought Nikon prices were bad but at least you get the hood included!
The 83J can be had for $49 in the US so if you plan to visit Disney this year that's half the UK price (or I could ask Kerso nicely for you & he might pop one in the post for me!)

Re: just ordered a Canon 17-55f/2.8, need a hood

Paul
That does include postage so ill try and find one locally at some point or i might wait untill i get out to Florida. I have found one place that does it for £33+ p&p over here so might give them a call. I would rather get a Canon one as opposed to an ebay copy.
I do need to get in touch with Ian as i was going to buy from him but it was going to workout about £50 cheaper than Warehouse express because of the method of payment so i felt it was worth the extra to have a Uk warranty, just in case i have to send it to Canon at some point or it goes wrong.

Dave - that was a quick look at B&HPhoto the big outfit in NY - I never looked at what postage would be but if you were going to do a future order with Ian I'm sure that'd be the cost effective way to get a bit off the hood (I presume for the price Canon want its made of carbon fibre & has Canon in gold leaf ) Paul

Re: just ordered a Canon 17-55f/2.8, need a hood

Paul
I have emailed Ian about it.

The cheapest option would be to wait until im out in the states but ill be using the lens from the moment i get it so i guess i should get one ASAP.
ill put my UV filter on it as soon as i get it anyway for protection form my kids sticky fingers more than anything else. Thanks god i have a 24-105L with one on. surprised Canon dont make every lens a different size to stop this

Ive looked around on ebay but also read a few threads about the cheap hood and think ill go for a proper, gold plated canon one.

Re: just ordered a Canon 17-55f/2.8, need a hood

Had to trawl through my Paypal statements to find his seller id: megadc06. Looks like his prices have gone up tho - £20.20 for the same hood now.

How do I know it's genuine? If it isn't it's a damn good copy - looks/feels/functions exactly the same as the one I nearly bought from York camera. But it was less than a third of the price.

Re: just ordered a Canon 17-55f/2.8, need a hood

Ok, thanks Tom
I just ordered one, like you say, if it works as well as its suposed to then its a very good deal.
Im not bothered if its a fake or even made by the bloke next door as long as the quaility is the same. I have read about a lot of the ebay ones not fitting well, not being as strong and not having the inside made out of the right material to stop light reflections.
