Talking vanity question regarding photoshop

a few months ago i took some photos at a 21st birthday party, anyway one of the girls who was at the party was a bit on the chubby side, having seen i had done some post processing work on some of the photos like eye colouring etc, she asked me if you can make people appear a bit thinner in photos, particularly with removing double chins, i said i thought it may be possible but was'ent sure how to do it myself, so basically thats the question to you guys, can it be done and if so how ? i guess i should have told her to go on a diet but really did'ent have the heart, plus i did'ent really fancy a crack around the head

Try this link

Ahoy!

I was going to post this link in a separate thread, but it may have the answers you seek (I don't know).

In any case, anyone using CS2 ought to find it useful.

Re: vanity question regarding photoshop

I asked my friend, who also photographed my wedding, if he could do something about a couple of chins and other lumps and bumps that were present in some of the photo's. His response was that he was 'a photographer not a plastic surgeon!'

Re: vanity question regarding photoshop

Liquify is the tool you're looking for.

It's hidden under filters in Photoshop 7 onwards I believe.

Anyway, rather than try and explain how to use it here, you're better off opening it up and having a play on your own, it's all pretty basic stuff.

Good luck

Edit: Just to remind myself, I had a quick play with it. One thing that I remember that is quite important: Use a larger brush size than you think, it's easier to get a smoother finish, especially if you're 'moving' legs, tummys etc.

Re: vanity question regarding photoshop

Liquid is spot on. Liquify tool all the way, and mentioned a larger brush will be better than a smaller one to give a better effect. Reduce the size only when you get into tight spots, for example between an arm and the side of the body when you don't want to affect the arm.

Using marquee selections before you start the liquify tool will also help a lot.

Always make a copy of your original layer as it's very easy to go too far with this tool.

Here's some examples. Roll mouse over each image to see before shots.

Mild change

Slightly more change

Fairly major change

Re: vanity question regarding photoshop

Just for fun I thought I'd take well known celebrity, Kelly Osbourne, and 'downsize' her.

This was all the liquify tool as Liquid101 mentions.

Re: vanity question regarding photoshop

Wow, they are amazing Wabbitt, especially the transformation in Kelly Osbourne! She looks quite fit in your version.

I had no idea that was what the liquefy tool could be used for. I have given it a go and it is really easy to use. So thanks for the top tip.

Another tip I just remembered. The liquify tool is quite strong when you first use it as default. Reduce the Brush Density to around 40 or 50 and the effect you apply is much more manageable.

Hope that helps everyone a bit.

Thanks.

I just did a web search for tattoos and when I found a pattern that I liked (the dragon in this case) I made sure it was a black pattern on a transparent background.

Then I placed the tattoo roughly where I wanted it and scaled it correctly. Using the liquify tool (again) I made sure it followed the contours of the back. The blend mode was then changed to Linear Burn which makes it look more like it's etched into the skin.

I reduced the opacity slightly and then added a slight blur to make it look realistic as possible.

It's a good thing to try and can look quite realistic most of the time.

If you have a colour tattoo then you might want to try some other blend modes (soft light and hard light seem to work well).

Re: vanity question regarding photoshop

the liquify tool has always been a way to beat bordom for me! just open up a photo of someone and mess them up, like its been said, use a bigger brush than you think you need. This might be the reason people look like klingons after being processed! dont make the changes to drastic. The kelly osbourne pic is a good example, the tool has worked well but nobody would know thats kelly!
Dont make your friend unrecognisable!

Re: vanity question regarding photoshop

Do you need the full Photoshop to get this liquify feature?

I'm a dedicated Paint Shop Pro user (Version 9 at the Moment, but been using since version 4). I'm only a domestic consumer user but have been considering trying Elements.

Mark.
