I am starting my new internet business this year selling jewellery a few of the suppliers I use have got horrendous pictures of their products.Can anyone give me any tips on what camera and lighting I might need or more to the point which equipment I can afford and use without needing a degree in physics...

This photobox is on ebay and says that a compact digital camera can take good pictures....any thoughts???

The pictures of jewelry on the ebay site you linked to will almost certainly have been shot with a macro lens,so if you want to highlight the close details of a piece,then Id recommend going Dslr with a macro lens maybe a nikon D40http://www.onestop-digital.com/catal...roducts_id=388 with a tamron macrohttp://www.onestop-digital.com/catal...roducts_id=339 if budget is an issue.

Will the Nikon D50 do the job as well as the D40,only asking as I have £100 of vouchers for Argos.....

AFAIK the Nikon D40 won't autofocus with the Tamon 70-300, you would have to focus manually. The kit 18-55 lens also takes pretty good close ups and does autofocus. AFAIK you can only buy the D40 bundled with the kit lens.
Most better point and shoots will also take pretty good close ups with good depth of field, so if you are on a budget this might be worth considering. The key is good lighting, and don't use the on board flash.

Better, because it will autofocus with lenses that do not have built in motors.
