looking for a scanner

Does anyone know of a good scanner. I am looking to scan some old 35mm negatives and re print them (what software would i need to put colour into the negs).

Also want to scan some old 6x4 prints - my current scanner is about 6 years old and makes a right mess of anything in it!

Re: looking for a scanner

Short answer is that a dedicated film scanner will give you the best quality scans but at a price, possibly not a good option financially if you're just going to scan the negatives and that's it. Many flatbeds will also do negatives, and the results are pretty good.

This old thread might be helpful:

Scanning slides

You don't mention how many you've got, but also consider how long it's going to take for each, especially if you're going to need to clean up the scans, adjust the colours etc.

Re: looking for a scanner

On a similar note. Is it possible to actually get a scannet that will take an udeveloped roll of film and put the images straight onto a PC?

Guessing if so it would be quite expensive. I have seen some articales say they have a roll film adapter but wasn't definite if that meant it will scan the film straight after taking it from the camera.

Re: looking for a scanner

Hi Shaolin101,

I tried scanning transparancies (positive and negative film) on my Epson Perfection and whilst it was OK it was wee'd over by the Minolta Dimage 5400! You cannot beat a dedicated transparancy scanner but they are expensive. On the idea of scanning un-processed film it is a no-hoper. The film is scanned by shining a very bright light through it - so your pictures would get somewhat over-exposed and over-written! You can buy adapters for some scanners that allow you to feed a developed roll through but I don't know what make or model does this. My Minolta scans film that is cut into sections of 4. It takes time and a reasonable computer to do it on. I hope this helps you.

Re: looking for a scanner

Dedicated film scanners are expensive, and to scan unexposed film... not a chance.

However, I've found the Canon LiDE range to be fantastic at scanning (albeit slowly) 35mm negatives to be very good.

I have an old LiDE-80, which to be honest is just fab.

But as is the trend there are better, faster Canon scanners out now.

This is a recommended option

Thanks,

Thats what i didn't get about the roll scanner - I didn't realised you can get negatives in roll form - thought it was just as the strips that you tend to get with the prints so started to asume it was a developer!

yay! i have the LiDE 80 too i love it! it just doesnt take up any room and it gives a decent enough neg scan when needed. My only gripe is i had mounted slides i wanted scanning and getting them out of the mounts to scan was a pain.
Not long ago Jessops were selling the canon i9900 scanner for £50 which imo was bargain of the year. My girlfriend picked one up at that price and i recommended someone on here to get one and he seemed to love it!
