30D v 5D wide and at the long end..

Currently have a 30D with a few lenses and am thinking of going to the 5D. Lenses are EF-S 10-22, EF 16-35 L, EF 24-105 L, EF 100-400 L + Sigma 30 f/1.4.

Anyone got any thoughts of pluses and minuses?!?

Now if I swap to the 5D I gain IQ & my 24-105 becomes better for landscapes, but I loose out at the long end and also loose out on the FPS.

Anyone had any direct comparisons between a 30D + 10-22 v 5D + 16-35?

I love taking photos of stuff at the wide end and just wondered if the 16-35 on the 5D was as good as the 10-22 on the 30D. I imagine it is, but I have never been overly impressed with the 16-35 on my 30D.

Does anyone also have any ideas if the 100-400 on the 5D will be too short over it on the 30D for stuff like motorsport?!

I have been toying with the idea of the 16-35 for my 5D

In theory it is the same as the 10-22 on a cropper after the 1.6x multiplier is taken into account. You will keep the 24-105, 100-400 and 16-35 so my advice would be go for it

Are you ever done in Somerset? I'm 20 miles south of Bristol and would be happy to let you bolt the 16-35mm onto my 5D. Would let us both see if it's worth the investment

With the lenses you have you are primed for a full frame upgrade mate, let me know if you want to take me up on the offer. I do frequent Worcester but alas not for a couple of weeks now

Re: 30D v 5D wide and at the long end..

Thanks for the offer, I will mull it over as the 5D is scarily VERY tempting!!

What I love about the 10-22 is the bright almost exagerated colours it produces. Wasn't sure if that was down to the lens or if that's just what all wide angles look like. It's perfect for taking landscapes when walking up a hill on on a beach.

What about the long end do you find out you loose out much? I'm very concious over going over 350mm on the 100-400 as it seems to drop off IQ wise. Without the 1.6x crop that'll obviously come up much quicker.

BTW The 1.4x went a while back mate..

Bah, will have to grab one new

I haven't had a chance to use the 100-400 in anger yet but will this weekend Having taken a quick few shots on both lenses I can't say I've lost a great deal of reach. Also don't notice the IQ drop after 350, will keep an eye on that

Re: 30D v 5D wide and at the long end..

Unless you need the speed of the 16-35 you can save a bundle by getting the 17-40mm and the latter is arguably sharper in the corners than the former.

Overall, as an owner of the 30D and a 5D, the latter murders the former. So much so that I'm selling my 30D next week. Either a second 5D will come in, or I may wait to see what Canon do in March (and rent a second 5D if I need one in the meantime).

One lens that is shatteringly good on the 5D is the 35/1.4L. Amazing.

I've never been overwhelmed with this lens - I've tried numerous copies on numerous cameras but was always less than impressed. Far too much distortion for my liking -with it being quite pronounced at the extreme edges.

Yes, I had one around a year ago and that was not great, the copy I have now is much much better but not as good as I expected. If it's as good as it gets then I think I'll get the 5D, play with the 5D + 16-35 v the 30D + 10-22 and if it's not significantly better then sell the 16-35 and try a 17-40 instead and save myself a few quid. I mainly use it outside anyway so f/4 v f/2.8 doesn't bother me.
