Your most used lens ?

Howdy,

So I'm looking to pickup a new lens, something I can use as my main walk-about / photo walking lens. At present I only have the Canon 18-55mm (kit lens) and the Sigma 70-300mm. I'm starting to see the limations with the kit lens and really would rather not keep swapping out to the Sigma for a lot of my shots, especially as it doesnt have IS and indeed I dont have a tripod (as yet)

So what do you use as your main lens, just for general photowalking etc, or what are you thinking of getting?

cheers

Nige

[edit - PS I'm a 350D user]

Re: Your most used lens ?

My star lens (I only have three) is the fixed 50mm f1.4. An absolute bargain for about £250, although performance rivals zoom lenses costing much much more. It's a cost-effective way to find out just how good the 350d will go without spending huge amounts of money. I find it goes on the camera virtually all the time.

Re: Your most used lens ?

I just put this ad for my Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM lens in the for sale section. It's a very versatile lens and would cover the low end of your range, complementing your Sigma.

Re: Your most used lens ?

Mine is the 24-70mm f/2.8L followed closely by 50mm f/1.4.

You could do a lot worse than the 17-85mm walkabout and it's a step up from the kit.

If you mean the Canon EF-S 17-85mm USM IS f4-5.6,
Its a huge step up . Although at £350-400, it had better be!
Seriously, put in on the camera, youll never use the kit lens again.

Kaoshans ad seems a good bargain esp with filter and hood

Re: Your most used lens ?

I just bought an 18-200mm Sigma which is light and compact enough to be my new walkabout lens with my 350D and I am thoroughly impressed so far!

Has replaced the kit lens and I just know the kit lens is to never see the light of day -- again.

Will try and get the fixed 50mm lens soon.

Re: Your most used lens ?

When I am out and about I tend to use my 70-300 IS lens the most but then I tend to try and photograph wildlife etc and so dont have the option of getting up close and personal.

At home I tend to do more "staged" photos (wouldnt flatter myself by saying "studio" and so the EF-S 60/F2.8 macro gets a lot of use.

I would very much like to get a lens to replace the kit but I am torn between the 24-70L the 24-105L IS but given that I am trying not to spend money at the moment I have plenty of time to make the decision

Re: Your most used lens ?

99% of all my photos have been taken with the Sigma 70-300 APO, so I think I've had value for money out of that lens already As winter approaches I envisage doing more landscape stuff as there won't be so much wildlife about, so will try the kit lens and see how I get on with that before getting upgraditis

Re: Your most used lens ?

over the past month or so pretty much every photo ive taken has been with the Sigma 24-70 2.8... cracking lens, especially for the price.

Re: Your most used lens ?

18-200 VR, incredibly verstile but it's Nikon, sorry! Next:12-24. Next: macro. Next: wide aperture (eg 50mm).
