A few windsurfers in Cornwall

Ok let's get the excuses in first . It was a very grey day. Sort of monochromatic, the sort of day when the sky and the sea just merged into one. Not always bad but it would have been nice to get some sun to pick out the waves or the boarders. Also it was VERY VERY windy. Great for surfing but lots of wind blown sand is not great when trying to put an extender on your lens. It was also quite hard to stand still at times the wind was that strong. The images are a bit (lot) noisy. This is due to the fact that I have cropped from the full frame and I was at ISO800 due to the low light and the zoom + extender combination. Despite that I thought I'd share anyway. Any yes - I did get very wet feet.

Think I should have put this one in for the UP competition

Re: A few windsurfers in Cornwall

Nice pics, especially considering the weather!.

Conditions look great for windsurfing. Makes me jealous I've not had my board out all year.

Which lens was used on these? 100-300?

The 70-200f4 + 1.4 extender which, I notice, the exif correctly reports as 280mm. However the image is a severe crop from the full frame. Deffo need a longer lens for these boys or a wetsuit

Great shots despite the adverse conditions - you must have been getting your feet wet taking them with that lens combo!

Nice shots - in a way I think the overcast conditions help the vibrant colours on the surfers sails come forward.

BTW - how do you get those drops shadows to frame your shots?

Especially like no.4 and 6 - the town in the background really adds to the pictures.

The easiest way (in PS) is to make sure your image is slightly smaller than the canvas size and put it on it's own layer seperate from the background. Then apply a layer style (drop shadow) to the image layer. Or do the resize, canvas resize, new layer, layer style via an action to save time

Re: A few windsurfers in Cornwall

I really like all of them and I think the dull weather worked really well with the colours. Pity we can't see the exif though. Is that because you applied a border perhaps?

I think I lost the exif when I was at work and I didn't have access to the originals so I downloaded them from my Photobox album and uploaded them to Flickr. They were all basically the same though ISO 800, f8, 1/3000s at 280mm (200mm plus extender).

Re: A few windsurfers in Cornwall

Great shots which despite the grey conditions capture the sport pefectly. The background fades away and the colour is brought forward and defines the subject.

Re: A few windsurfers in Cornwall

Nice images. I find that when the day is grey like that if you do b+w transfers you can usually get even better results.

If you shot RAW then desaturate then play with colour temperature and hue then do the levels, brightness. I had a quick play with your last image to see what you could do with the jpeg and I think you can get some really nice results.

Even as they are though I like them!
