Showing photos on TV

Does anyone show their photos on the TV?

I have got a Sony HXD710 DVD recorder, so I guess I could connect my Sony camera to it by S-Video, but would prefer to make a disc of some type.

I use NeroVision Express to make up DVD slideshows. You can set up chapters, add music, different fades, and they play on any normal DVD player.

Cheers,
Liam

Re: Showing photos on TV

I have a Sony 46" X series, which displays at 1920 x 1080 (p) resolution.

I feed this with a Pixel Magic MB100 media box, which streams photos from my PC. This gives the same quality as I would get connecting the TV directly to a PC, but is silent (no fan) for my living room (and very small).

I then optimise photos for 1920 x 1080 using Adobe Photoshop.

The results are absolutely stunning.

Here is a photo. The MB100 is the little box on the left. It is connected to my PC (in another room) by Ethernet cable.

Re: Showing photos on TV

My TV actually Has a media card ( and usb) reader and has the option of viewing the Images in HD!
Very nice ( But.. I seldom use it)

No streaming for me , I just go the "low tech" way

What I do is to make a DVD video slide show with ProShow Gold
with lots of transitions, pan and zoom effects and music then watch it on TV.
I also make slideshows from stills to accompany a video shot simultaneously to be watched on Tv when authoring a DVD of such an event

Tasty TV!

Does the Pixel Magic thingy stream video as well? Its fairly discrete compared to some of the other things I've seen.

Re: Showing photos on TV

Yes, it streams MPEG2 (even HD) perfectly. I have a Sony HD camcorder, and I can stream the raw 20Mbit/s MPEG2 files directly to the TV with no loss of quality. You can also stream HD material (e.g. from the USA), as well as DVD VOB files, divx, WMV etc etc.

The nice thing about the media box is that it also outputs at 1080p through HDMI, making it ideally suited to the TV.

Re: Showing photos on TV

I use MCE if I need to stream the pictures via my 360's. If you use the supplied video out lead for the 350d the quality is shocking

If you have a HD set and just want to look on your own TV, I'd recommend a 'box of tricks' - something that can show the pics in the resolution of your TV, not limited to composite or svideo. Its also helpful to be able to see your latest pictures after you've dumped them off the camera without having to burn a DVD

Xbox modded with XBMC works well, as does Xbox 360 (with XP or MCE, doesn't matter for pics). PS3 will probably do the same

Re: Showing photos on TV

I have an Xbox 360 also. However, I find that the image quality is significantly worse (feeding a 1080 TV through component) than either a PC or the MB100 media box. I've also had a Pinnacle media box for a short while, and while photos were much better than the Xbox 360, it still did not match the quality of a PC or MB100 (both using HDMI/DVI). The differences are not subtle by any means. IT seems that many manufacturers give low priority to images.

Re: Showing photos on TV

I use one of three options depending on what it's for.
  • XBOX 360 streamed from my PC using Media Connect
  • Stick 'em on a USB Drive and plug them in the side of my telly and use the TV remote
  • Use ProShow Gold to create a DVD

Actually the 360 one is the easiest to use and works for most of what I need.

The second option is good for friends who have MP3 players or small USB drives. The TV will play music and photos.

ProShow is strictly for weddings!

Re: Showing photos on TV

I also use the xbox 360 with media centre, then the pics come up on the TV in hi-def and look very very good.
