I have been photographing books with a finepix 2600, I use PSP 9 to resize and compress them, the finished photo needs to be aprox (400*400) 35kb jpg.
Any suggestions for getting a good end result with the least loss of quality would be much appreciated.

Well if you use PSP you just need to resize to the size you want, select save and when it asks you to put the filename in, select the optimiser option, you can then compress to whatever level gives you 35kb.

If most of the pages are black and white, the file sizes should be pretty small. There isn't much you can do if you have a maximum of 45KB.

Also sharpen them before finally saving, you can sharpen quite a bit before halos appear.

Jazz Monkey Jr, the pics are of the book cover so that people can see what condition the book is in. Sorry I did not make my self clear.

SSB, that's the way I have been doing it, the results are fairly good, the colours ( reds can go a bit hazy) tend to clash at times.
As Jazz Monkey says not a lot you can do compressing down to such a small size.

Do you have to use JPG? If it's just text you are copying, GIF or PNG files may be better suited. You can cut the size of the colour palette down, and the type of lossy compression used will be much better suited to the hard edges of text.

Edit: Ah, if it's just the covers, which could contain images/photographs, then GIF or PNG may not be suitable.
