Wide-fatboy-angle

Well...

After a lot of deliberation.
I'm now a proud owner of Sigma 10-20 DC HSM wideangle lens.
I've got it sitting on my 350D right now!

I've not had chance to play with it properly yet - apart from the obligatory running round the house getting shows of all the rooms to go - Ooo, isn't it wide!
(I've missed having a proper wide angle - I always used to have a wide on my old film camera - lets see how I get on with this one!!!!)

One thing I missed from all the reviews - it's a heavy mother!
Makes the kit lens look silf like.

I bought one last week on the say so of these fine chaps and i have yet to get to use it for anything special, but, its really a great toy to have in your bag. I have loved playing with it, testing its limits and seeing what i can now capture.

Re: Wide-fatboy-angle

If my bonus is really what it says on my payslip, then I might be picking another one of these up. I've missed it a few times now and had to put up with 24 at the wide end which just isn't enough sometimes.

what are you thinking Steve?

no conundrum - you'd just need another zoom for the long end. 10-20 for wide, 24-105 for day to day, and a 70-200/70-300ish for the long end. I hear the 70-200 f2.8 IS is nice :P

Wish I'd held out a little longer and saved for one of those. Although I'm happy with my 17-85IS, I do think that as a general walkabout lens the 24-105 would have been much better for me especially now that I have the Canon 10-22. I know it costs a bit more but the quality and extra reach would really be a benefit. I am seriously thinking of upgrading to this lens and I know there won't be much of a problem selling my 17-85 but it's getting around the wife that's going to be the tricky bit

I am gettig one of these, maybe next month, where is stock?

I had a play with a 70-200 L on Saturday but wasn't that impressed, I don't think I really need that much zoom.

Re: Wide-fatboy-angle

PeaJay, Looks like you have a nice copy of the lens there, lovely and sharp I have experienced the flash and lens hood problem a couple of times too.

Jazz, no idea who has stock, it's just a consideration at the moment. As I said, the Sigma has to go first, then i'll be back to the kit lens for a while I guess

Bowen, I mentioned it last night ........she wants the drive done

Richard, yeah right!

Re: Wide-fatboy-angle

I think my next purchase will be an ultra-wide - and the Sigma looks like the one to go for, much better value than the Canon equivalent.

thats where your creative accounting comes in.

Get a couple of quotes from the really expensive guys in the Yellow Pages that you'd never use. Then a few from some reasonably priced guys.

Show the savings that can be made, and that'll be enough to pay for your 24-105. Surely she wouldn't begrudge you the £150 it'll cost

Shopping should never be a hobby!

I always find bringing up my boyfriend's hobbies works well when I want to buy something. Of course I'm usually spending under £10 on a book while he's spending £40 on a video game, but when it came to buying the D50 I could point at his XBox 360, PS2, Gamecube & PSP

Of course I play on them as well, but then he's been trying out my camera.

Re: Wide-fatboy-angle

Went out for a walk a couple of nights ago...
took my camera and new lens with me (as you do)
this is a new school that has just openned round the corner from me.
it was getting late, so not to bright.
did a few colour twiddles, shrunk to fit and added a border

I'm liking this lens

took some real close ups of the kids faces too.
I wont post these because they look like alians!

Re: Wide-fatboy-angle

I went to have a look at this lens today - only one place had it in stock and no one seemed to know when new stocks were arriving, seems like they're very popular lenses.

I went for a Canon 10-22mm in the end - focussing seemed a little snappier and it's slightly faster. Not much in it though.

Bought it in the local camera shop - Castle Camera's - Salisbury!
(I have got all my kit from there actually - they did a good deal for the first lot, and hence i kept going back)
I have been looking for ages, and as you have found, nobody stocks them. (I think this is a Sigma supply problem)
I had a standing request that when they got any in, they'd ring me and offer me one - which they did.
They have a web-presence too, if you wanted to check them out
(www.castlecameras.co.uk)

I thought you could only get this if you'd purchased a canon camera and got one of those booklets of vouchers ? Then they only allow you to use 1 of the vouchers.

no. If you go on Canon's site you can request a booklet and they'll post you one out. Thats what I did as my 350d had the old booklet in which had expired. And you can only use one rebate per item, but you can do multiple items.
