Strange,
Play have confirmed there will be no v.a.t. or import tax etc. as the camera will be shipped from their warehouse near Heathrow, London.
I have also taken this from Her Majesty's Revenue & Custom's website... I am not saying Play.Com are one of the mentioned companieson the special scheme... but it seems they might be.
Goods purchased from traders in Jersey and Guernsey
Customs has in place with the Jersey and Guernsey Customs and Postal authorities a special scheme that allows many of their traders to collect and pay to UK Customs import VAT on sales they make to UK customers. These traders, who are approved by the Jersey and Guernsey authorities, are allocated a unique authorisation number and this should be stated on the outside of your package. Under these arrangements you will be asked to pay import VAT, if applicable, at the time you make your purchase, and will not have to pay any additional costs such as import VAT, or the Royal Mail handling fee, when you receive your goods.
Play have however (always a however) said they will try and keep the purchase price as low as possible... (in relation to the £10 price hike already) but until the unit is actually released they can not rule out a further increase, although unlikely this close to a release date. If any increase is to be made then they insist they will inform the buyer before completing the transaction, giving them every opportunity to decide if they wish to proceed... if the price rise is not significant then play will ship at the rate you agreed to purchase at & waiver the increase.
Play also said it is quite normal for electrical goods to rise slightly after they were first released.. as demand slows down the price goes up as they can not buy in the quantities they did when the product was first launched... makes sense kind of!
All in all they seem pretty fair to me & I don't think Jessops pricematch Channel Island companies (even if the goods are in England)
