Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

I see that play.com are advertising the 400D Body for £469 and with kit lens for £519.99 delivered and it is due on 11th. September but you can pre-order.

Jessops Price with the kit lens shows at £200 more!!!!!!!!! i.e a whopping £719

I think that this will make the choice of dSLR more difficult for those wanting to enter this field.

It will be interesting to see how low the 350D will go.

I've been trying to decide between the Nikon D50 and the Canon 350D for weeks now but this has given me something else to think about. You can already get the 350D with kit lens for about £469 which makes the 400D only £50 more.

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

Well the cheapest I could find a 350D & Kit lens was either £435 + about 6% cashback via quidco @ Jessops or £420ish (using promo codes) + about 4% cashback via Dixons

As you say, Jessops and Warehouse Express have this listed at £719 so I just figured I'd place the order and see what happens. If it's a mis-price they'll hopefully either honour the deal, notify me of a price change or cancel it.

If I become aware of any potential warranty issues I'll cancel it at my end (as this is my one niggling issue seeing as it's coming from Jersey) However the T&C's state that any faults arising within the first twelve months would be repaired in the "the relevant UK service centre" so I'm assuming that if I bought from a UK-based e-tailer the process would be very similar...

Order placed

Thanks

That surely has to be a mistake as it's as cheap as the 350D

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

Just ordered EOS 400D from play.com. Bought lots of stuff from there, so should be fine. £520 with lens - you cannot go wrong.

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

I wounder if anyone has been to Jessops to ask them to price match ?

Play.com are very good at reducing items after I always buy them. Like my harmony. 2 days after I got it they reduced it by £10.00.

Wow a EOS 400D even cheaper that the sony DSLR-A100.

They have previous for this - the D80 was £549 when they first offered it whereas it is £599 now (body only of course!)

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

I've found this for £599.97 so it could be just a good deal, well until we try to get a repair!
I've been considering which DSLR to purchase and I just can't refuse this price. Hopefully they'll honour it. They were recently advertising a new mobile phone for £100 less than anyone else, so it might just be especially keen pricing, not just that they've forgotten to add the VAT.

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

Dabs.com also at £528 for 400D + kits lens, body only £477 - no mention of expected arrival date. Dabs are UK based as well so no potential VAT issues.

Edit: If Dabs are getting them then you can bet that the other big Etailers (Ebuyer etc) will be getting them as well

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

Strange,

Play have confirmed there will be no v.a.t. or import tax etc. as the camera will be shipped from their warehouse near Heathrow, London.

I have also taken this from Her Majesty's Revenue & Custom's website... I am not saying Play.Com are one of the mentioned companieson the special scheme... but it seems they might be.

Goods purchased from traders in Jersey and Guernsey
Customs has in place with the Jersey and Guernsey Customs and Postal authorities a special scheme that allows many of their traders to collect and pay to UK Customs import VAT on sales they make to UK customers. These traders, who are approved by the Jersey and Guernsey authorities, are allocated a unique authorisation number and this should be stated on the outside of your package. Under these arrangements you will be asked to pay import VAT, if applicable, at the time you make your purchase, and will not have to pay any additional costs such as import VAT, or the Royal Mail handling fee, when you receive your goods.

Play have however (always a however) said they will try and keep the purchase price as low as possible... (in relation to the £10 price hike already) but until the unit is actually released they can not rule out a further increase, although unlikely this close to a release date. If any increase is to be made then they insist they will inform the buyer before completing the transaction, giving them every opportunity to decide if they wish to proceed... if the price rise is not significant then play will ship at the rate you agreed to purchase at & waiver the increase.

Play also said it is quite normal for electrical goods to rise slightly after they were first released.. as demand slows down the price goes up as they can not buy in the quantities they did when the product was first launched... makes sense kind of!

All in all they seem pretty fair to me & I don't think Jessops pricematch Channel Island companies (even if the goods are in England)

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

I think that if a supplier advertises a pre-release product and accepts orders for a specific price then it should not change pre-orders unless a major price rise has actually been announced by the supplier since the date the pre-order was accepted.

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

Sorry, my mistake.

My account is a bit odd, even though I competed checkout yesterday it still shows as a possible purchase on my computer with the new price.
When I check my machine from elsewhere my order price has not changed.

I've always had good dealings with Play so I'm sure it'll come out ok.

It's just that I've had a few companies take pre-orders recently then state 'we are allowed to totally change the price we charge when we confirm'. Mistakes I accept can happen so try not to get annoyed. I'd have even understood DVDsoon cancelling the Sony PSP's last year!

Now to find a good price for a spare battery&CF.

Well im going to sell my 350D and get a 400D

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

Just returned my un-opened 350D kit to Jessops... now have £611.99 to pay for the 400D.. even though I only brought my 350D a week ago and Jessops receipt says 30 day exchange & refund... they did not seem too happy to accept it back...

for info they said the 400D should be in their warehouse today... and they may receive in store tomorrow!! @ £699.99 now..

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

I picked up a 400D with kit lens in Jessops today for £539.95
To do this I took in a print out of this page from Cameras2u
As long as it says the camera is in stock they'll price match it.

Totally daunted by all the features on this camera (this is my first dslr), its going to be fun seeing what this baby can do!

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

Well I've cancelled my play.com order - checked its status today and was advised that the 400d is out of stock so it looks like their initial allocation has been used up already.

So, went up to my local Jessops today and the kind chap price-matched a 400d for £539.99

So that's my weekend sorted anyway and for £20 more than what I ordered from play.com I can take it straight back to the store if any problems arise

Yes they do. Jessops ring up their head office to confirm the website. In actual fact the printout I took in from Cameras2u had the price missing from it as I hadn't setup my margins correctly before printing it out, I didn't even notice until I handed it over. They questioned the price but went and phoned anyway, within 5 mins they were back confirming the pricematch for £539.95.
They must of looked it up online to confirm it.

Sounds like they were playing you along a bit as Cameras2u (and shopping4cameras) is owned by Jessops so I am sure they would be well aware of what the price on their website was...

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

wow at these prices!

My 350d + kit lens cost me £590 and I still haven't paid for it yet... (buy now pay November). Now I can have a newer 400D for £50 less

What would I get for a 350d body only in the classifieds or on ebay? If I could change up for £150 ish I think I'd do it.

Re: Canon EOS 400D - Good Price?

I too have cancelled my order for the 400d + kit lens from play.com because of lack of stock. Now ordered from cameras2u. After some research, decided to get just the body and a sigma 28-300 lens as well as it covers every possibility I need. I could always buy a dedicated wide angle lens if need be. Roll on next week

What would I get for a 350d body only in the classifieds or on ebay? If I could change up for £150 ish I think I'd do it.
You'd have to consider if it's worth it, if your photgraphy has improved so much, you may want to move up a nothc and go for something like a 30D or whatever. The way I see things, the 400D isn't that much of a step up in term of equipment.
