OLD or NEW

Looking to buy my 1st DSLR . Instead of buying new are then any classics out there that are a few years old but still very recomended .

Just thought olympus E-1 etc ?

Any of the older series Canon ones will see you in good stead; e.g. the D30, D60, D10.
I started with the D30 - not long after it was released - and loved it for about 5-6 years... until the 5D lured me

Not sure what the prices are like nowadays, though - I've still got the old one, and haven't looked properly into selling it yet.

I would go for new, but if money is tight try a d300 of fleabay,
still a good camera (its what i use, saving hard for the D5)
