5D test shots

Been looking at the Canon 5D after this weeks discussion thread and rattled out some test shots in RAW with my 50mm 1.8 prime attached, courstey of Jessops; The horsefair Bristol.

Nice, very nice. However, first error with FF was to not mentally note the zoom change and as shot over a counter could not zoom with feet. (we all know I like those tight portrait shots)

That said, a nice quick portrait shot. F2.2, 250, no flash ISO 500 (too much?) as light not great in store. Edited in Capture One and then CS2.

Advice taken in that the usual things apply here with reference to good quality glass required though my £60.00 50mm prime lookds great to me, but apparently the 24 - 700 excels as would Seans prime kit.

This could be my next move and seems logical given my preferred shooting style and method. Would just love top spend more time with it tbh. :shake:

With reference to HCkings build, whilst its not a 1d, it is sound and seems very 'camera' like and similar in shape and feel to a ESO1 I think.

Any thoughts/opinions?

It seems silky smooth to me and is very film like though no expert.

Shots look good to me. One of the strong points about the larger sensor on the 5D is that the pixels are larger - meaning less digital noise as you go up the ISO range. From the reviews I've read (and sample pics I've seen) the higher ISO levels (upto 3200 on this cam) are very useable whereas some other cameras produce a lot more noise and need nore pp. Also the 5D can go down to ISO 50 for great landscape shots on your tripod and can be changed in 1/3 increments - lots of control for the photographer there.

If you were shooting a lot of wildlife you might worry about losing the advantage of the 1.6 crop factor at the tele end but given your style I think FF will be right up your street. If there are no product announcements soon which affect the 30D-5D area I think I'll be getting one myself.

Yeah, all the reviews suggest a great PQ. My dealer stated that serious amatuers have been bying the 5D and all are over the moon, aside from the early 105L issue which has been sorted with a software upgrade apparently.

No. No one local stocks it. Order only - do you reckon London stores would stock it?

It seems that a combo of both machines would be ideal for me or a D2Xs

FYI A few Jessops in London (New Oxford Street and BlueWater (Kent) hold 1D Mk.II N in stock. Got mine there

. They were very good in fact, good long play with lots of Lens changes allowed (well I was spending £2K!).

I've been toying with getting a 5D to replace my 20D - I went to a canon seminar a few weeks back and had a play with one. Also spoke to a few folks who use them instead of the 1 series due to the smaller size - something that appeals to me. The 1 series is just too bulky for me.
My only issue with the 5D is that I have a 17-55 2.8 IS which, as it's an EF-S mount, is incompatible.

Yeah, it really is a gorgeous machine despite what a lot of internet desk jockeys may say. I think that initially nobody really worked how where the camera sat in the market and it took flack for that. Evidently, it has become a niche machine for serious amateurs and pros alike, heck even a spanner like me can use one. In fact I hate the wording ‘serious amatuer’; anyone can use it assuming you like taking pictures.

Massive differences over the 1.6 crop and the RAW images I shot are silky smooth.

It does look like a camera too, if that makes any sense. The 1D series look like tools, which in is what they are in effect.

TBH, I have decided to put any purchase on the backburner but am going to monitor the market until later in the year as I am convinced that the 5D and the 30D are going to be superseded asap by Canon as a retort to the 80D/200D combo Nikon has to offer.

As everyone will advise, you really need to work out your shooting style and roll with the camera that suits you. If I am honest I shoot 8 fps vary rarely and have even honed my skill to shoot 3 fps at sport and nail the shot with my ability, not the camera though I in no way discourage 8fps if you can get it or have it.

I am still yet to see a 1dn in the flesh so I may jump on a mechanical dragon and ride it to London Town one Sunday and see what the big smoke has to offer.

yeah New Oxford Street branch of jessops is one of the biggest. The world camera centre they call in in jessops. They even have departments! That is the most likely place to have a 1dIIN in stock but also the most likely to sell them. Please make sure you ring in advance. ASK! on Tottenham court road (the big one not the little one) have plenty of hardware instock but again ring in advance, it has about 4-5 floors, i think the 2nd is for photography. Didnt have the panny lx1 last year when i looked but at least he knew was it was.

Calumet's another option - if they don't have a retail body they'll almost certainly have a rental body to have a nose at.

Well, I've had another play with a 5D and am going to get one - I'm buying from Jessops just in case I get a week in and find something I don't like, but seems very good from what I've seen:

All shots are straight out of camera and just converted to jpg btw.

24-105mm @ f4 & iso1000 - so wide open

24-105mm @ f5.6 & iso200 - this showing the IS as it's 1/25s

24-105mm @ f5.6 and ISO1600 - so clean

£2100 for the 5D and 24-105mm f4 L IS USM all in after cashback. Less than I was planning to spend so pleased with that.

Will probably also go for the 50/1.4 and 70-200 f4 with a 580EX, and considering the 85/1.8.

I saw that deal too. Makes the 24-105 very cheap (around £400 instead of £700).

Can I ask if you have cropped the photos at all ? The reports that worry me about the ff of the 5D is the vignetting when wide open with the 24-105 or 24-70 at the 24mm end of the zoom. Can't see any on you pics though. Did you take any at 24mm ?

Ray, the 24 - 105mm 'issue' was cleared up early by Canon who advised that it was simply a combo incompatability thing which the R and D at Canon simply could not work out. That said, they sorted it with a mass withdrawl, replacements and software upgrades. Hence the shortage on 24 - 105mm L for some time a while back. I heard that from a Canon rep on Sat AM as he was in LCE when I was talking about the 5D with them too.

Thanks for that info Pete. I was quite startled by some of the review pics I've seen showing the dramatic light drop off at the edges at less than 28mm. Last thing I need is more pp in RAW to fix it. One of the things that attracts me to the 5D is the quality of the large jpgs out of the camera which require very little pp. The 5D plus 24-105L for £2100 is looking very attractive.

I didn't match - that was just the price in-store after a haggle.

I won't run both systems though so there may well be a BIG Nikon sale going on soon.

I'll have the camera tonight so will try this out but I did shoot some 24mm shots and they seemed ok to me - bear with me.....

here you go:

24-105mm, 24mm, f5.6, ISO400, 1/50s

Nothing there that would bother me.
