I am thinking of buying this compact does anyone know if it has image stabilization

No - it doesn't, but it still is a very good camera in its own right (Point and shoot with manual controls).
For Image Stabilization from the Canon range you will need to try the Ixus 800 IS (P&S, 6mp, 4x opt zoom and IS) or the S3 IS (step up from P&S but not dslr standard, 6mp, 12x opt zoom and IS).

most beautiful little camera with lots of features & settings available.
no image stabilisation.
usb2.0 means high speed downloads.
main (only?) weakness - dim lighting conditions (indoors or at dusk) - i.e., need to use flash or a tripod sooner than expected. this can be redeemed by setting ISO to 200 or 400 but only to a certain extend.
