L lenses - perception

I have read previous threads on the "snob" value of L lenses. The mere fact that they have a red ring or are white tends to make them quite obvious to others. Some people buy them just because of this reason, others have indicated that they don't like to be noticed as they could become targets.

Well, last night the conspicuity of these lenses was brought home to me. My 4 year old daughter saw me messing around with my camera, with the new 24-70 attached. She then said "Dad, you've got a new camera", to which I replied, "no I haven't". She then looked at me disbelievingly and said "you have! Look, this red ring was not here before."

Now I would have thought that the larger size over the 28-135 or 50 1.8 that used to grace the camera, or the massive lens hood would have been more obvious changes than the red ring. If this was Canon's intention, then I think their designers can pat themselves on the back.

The downside: if you think you can move up to L lenses and hope to keep the other half in the dark about it, you may not get away with it!

.. Very true, My 17-85 mm IS USM lens bought to replace the 350Ds kit lens did not come to SWMBO notice (though my eagle eyed 9 year old daughter said "Dad that is a bigger lens how did it get onto the camera?")

She ( the wife) did eventually see the box !! but not having L helped keep things quiet for a bit

PS: I can see your brother in laws L lenses have infected you
TBH though you original pics without L have been very nice to see as you seem to have an eye for what looks good ( wife, kids, garden, ...whatever)
