CF microdrive cheap CF storage???

So I purchased my DSC R1 for my honeymoon...

Now comes the question of storage!

Im away for 3 weeks, and currently have a 1Gig pro-duo, which in RAW mode, is not really good enough for a day...

I managed to convince "t'other half" that taking a laptop on honeymoon isn't the end of the world... But as much as I am glued to my lovely x black glossy 17" widescreen... I have more important things to do when in the room...

Funds are slightly lacking (no suprise there ), but find myself with a need to look for more storage for a few days of pics before a bulk transfer and backup burn onto dvd...

So I was looking on Ebay and I can pick up 4Gig microdrives for the same price as 1 gig CF cards...

Any comments, pros/cons? Battery life is crazy long on the camera at the moment, so Im thinking a nightly charge will be the most I'd need...

Cheers,

Gareth.

Gareth, I'm not aware of the exact specs of a DSC R1, but I assume it is a fairly high MP camera?

I currently use a Lexar 2GB CF in my D70, and had exactly the same issue on my honeymoon last year. (3wks Fly/drive in California/Grand Canyon/Vegas - woohoo!)

I can get about 600 images on 2GB at top settings in Jpeg. I don't shoot in RAW, as I can't be bothered with the hassle of tweaking and converting images on my PC - especially for holiday snaps.

In the end I looked at all manner of portable storage devices for backing up images, plus I looked at extra CF cards, Microdrives etc, as I wanted to ensure I had backed up and saved the photos, plus had enough storage to take all I wanted.

My opinion on MD's is that they do offer cheap storage, but they are no where near as robust as std CF, since they have movable parts in them - they are in effect tiny HDD's. So security and integrity of the images is not as high as CF.

Cost is a factor, but in the end I decided to buy a cheap small low spec notebook and stuck a 40GB drive in it. I shot in JPEG, backed up to the laptop in the hotel every night, plus was able to send emails home to friends and family and make them jealous, plus was able to do some research on places to go visit and plan routes etc while we were away.

I'd suggest stick with the laptop, switch to JPEG shooting and maybe buy one other large capacity solid state card for the camera.

Wow, 8Gig...

The issue is with the cost...

The 1 Gig card I have cost me £28.

I would get an ultrafast, all singing and dancing solid state, but holding on to money at the moment is like holding water in a siv...

The reason I was looking at the microdrive was purly the economics of bang for buck...

I like the RAW editing, and as this is a 10MP camera, I'm going to be printing some extra huge pics at a print house in Soho...

I actually have a small fortress of mobile HDD chasseys and even more HDDs laying around... But a fresh install of my Vaio has given me 45Gig of free space and a hand full of DVD-r's will perminantly back this up too.

The issue is portable storage without laptop... the LAcies you still need to mount to a PC...

Ah yeah, portable storage can either be cheap with laptop or expensive with another device.

I have a 2gb CF card and a 4gb Microdrive. I find both very useful. There's a faster response from the CF, but the MD is useful to mass storage, especially if I'm in the mood for taking loads of photos.

I've never had a problem with either, though it is known that the MD is more at risk from shock and such.

Bottom line, it's down to cost and ease of use.

Have you thought of a usb "on-the-go" bridge, it would be perfect if you have a portable hard disk or even an ipod. It acts as the host so you can conect two non-hosting usb devices together ie. copy photo's direct from the camera to a portable hard drive or an mp3 player.

As i have recently bent the pins for the CF port in my Archos mp3 player (dont ask) i will be taking delivery of such a bridge that cost £5 on ebay. if it works ok i have 40gb of truely portable storage at my disposal again (if not i'll have to pay the repair bill, doh)
