London "Open House"

Someone told me there was an event on this weekend called London Open House.

Never done it before but from what I can gather, its a load of architectuarly interesting buildings that are open (for free?).

I just wondered if any big city sky rises were open to get photos from, a friend of mine said that the Gherkin might be open to view from?

Cheers,

Ben.

Yep, it's on this weekend - more info here. I've nearly always missed this as it always seems to clash with weekend work, but might have a visit this weekend.

Pretty much as you said, lots of interesting buildings around London opened up to look around - some very good photo opportunities to be had.

There was a change in policy this year and you had to apply for a ballot to get into certain venues - this has caused a bit of controversy from what I can tell.

Just a word of warning for the Gherkin - last time it took part in this, the queue was 1 mile long by 9AM !!!

Hey Garf,

Yep, I have already looked at the site you linked to. I am a little confused though, perhaps its the website being a bit crap, but I am finding it hard to work out exactly what area and what venues are open. I take it The Shard is not taking part? Do you (or anyone else) know of any other high rise buildings that might offer good photo opportunities, either out of windows or balconies (I guess roofs are out of the question).

I am not really all that interested in the architecture of the buildings, more the vantage points they might offer for panoramic pictures.

I saw a really good photo in a mag, (I think it may have been an advert actually) and it was taken quite high up looking over the Thames near the 02 Arena at nighttime. Would love to know if that building was open...?!

Cheers,

Ben.
