Unfortunately on a camera forum people posting rubbish about Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus or any other camera brand is pretty much a given.

The D700 was a slightly cutdown D3 keeping most of the best bits including the superb sensor but at a lower price. The D800 though doesn't use the D4's new sensor and instead seems aimed primarily at the 5D Mk II market which I assume is because they don't want to take any sales away from the pricey D4 and the 5D mk II has been a great seller.

It would be amusing if Canon produced a D700 successor after Nikon now seem to have produced a 5D Mk II successor. The D800 spec looks impressive but the main use for my D700 is low light and there's where I'd need a decent improvement to convince me to fork out a couple of grand. Or maybe not, time will tell.

The high iso looks better than I'd expect in those pictures although it does look well lit, there's a comparison here in a deliberately underexposed area:

Another Nikon D700 vs. Nikon D800 high ISO comparison | Nikon Rumors

The amount of detail the D800 seems to be retaining is impressive.

Making my decision on which camera next difficult!

5D3 is not looking that attractive, doesnt seem to fix the low iso banding issues etc.

No and it's hardly anything new - Sony were using Microsoft's flagship racing game Project Gotham Racing 4 to show off the power of the PS3 and Apple were using Windows servers to host Apple websites.

I'm sure the D800 is capable of recording stunning videos, so why use a competition camera for that and what's even worse without agreement.

Just crazy

I see it day to day in my job, people use copyrighted material just because its available online. Drives me nuts.

Client: "I want a brochure"

Me: "Sure, do you have supplied copy and images or should we do the copy and source the images for you?"

Client: "Ive designed all the pages in Word and sourced my own images from Google so you can just print it."

Me: "Sounds great, except I cant use what youve designed in Word, all the images arent print resolution and they are all copyrighted."

Client: "Oh"

Me: ""

I dont blame them, most people just think that if its on the web they can just take it and use it for their own purposes. Often its not clearly defined and google images doesnt help with that.

Some good points raised in this vid about what the high res could mean.

I'm not convinced, he seems to be trying to interpret the manual in a certain way to suit what he thinks while it sounds to me like the manual is just general good advice - I haven't checked a D700 manual but I remember similar recommendations for the 'low resolution' Olympus cameras. The pixel pitch is the same as the 16MP Sony APS-C sensor yet it doesn't have the problems the person is suggesting and despite taking many photos himself, the author doesn't say anything about having these problems when using the camera. Curiously he makes no mention of diffraction issues which there seems to be a lot of discussion on.
