Canon Lens Rumour

Rumour has it that the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS is being replaced next Tuesday.
There could also be another lens or two, possibly the 24-70 f/2.8L IS

Anyone know anymore?

I hope Canon don't replace their 70-200 f2.8 L IS, for 2 reasons;

1) I already own one and it'll make it worth less money

2) There's nothing wrong with it, sharp, fast, with IS and weather sealed. They've got loads of other lenses that need replaced before it.

Then lenses I'm hoping for are:

Canon EF 14-24 F4L that can take filters. (ie a replacement for the 17-40 F4L which IMO isn't sharp enough for the resolution of today's full frame bodies)

Canon EF 24-70 F2.8L IS

I Canon replace the 70-200 but offer no new ultra-wide angle I'm going to be mega ****** off!

Oh and the rumour mill suggests said announcement has been pushed back to January.

whats the rumour?

I can't see them making it faster, it'd be massive and its fast enough as it is. Can't see them making it slower as there is already a great F4. Can't see them making it lighter/smaller as there are limits to the physics. and its already USM right?

Maybe just adding the new hybrid IS to it?

I think they need to replace the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS.
It's well known to be quite soft, particularly wide open, and less sharp than the f/4 IS. If the new 100mm macro IS is anything to go by, they could make it lighter too as well as improving the IS. Good news if it happens.

Edit: latest info according to Canon Rumours is that the announcement is delayed until January.

I heard a salesman in my local camera shop a few months ago telling a customer to hold off buying a particular Canon lens because Canon where about to launch an updated version of it with better IS, I think he said that it worked in both horizontal and vertical plains but I wasn't listening properly and may be wrong. I can't quite remember what lens they were talking about but I didn't think it was the 70-200 as I'm sure that would have stuck in my memory as I own that lens too.

IS on the 24-70 makes sense, right now the fastest zoom with IS is the 17-55 EF-S

Most likely the new 100mm Macro IS.

IS on the 24-70 would put them ahead of the competition (or in line with sorny) and it needs an optical update compared to them too (especialy a the longer end). Will canon do it? who knows, but opdated optics and IS will put the price up 30-40% I think.

Again the 70-200 is seen to be behind the nikon one now and will likely get a refresh.

100-400L needs one probably wont get it. I doubt the 17-40L will get one its a great lens, and the 16-35 has recently had a refresh...

70-200 has been rumoured to get the hybrid IS for a while now, as has the 24-70.

speaking to a guy in jesops today and there are several lens rumors flying round. they didn't know for certain apart from the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS is at very low stock in the uk and they hadn't got a repeat orders in for the lens at the minute which he thought that particular lens might be getting an overhaul. feedback he's had from canon is that it's younger and much cheaper brother 70-200f4 is quite a bit sharper so they would be wanting to improve the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS.

i guess we'll find out in a few months if anything comes of these rumors
