New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

Been thinking about it for a while now.

Have been thinking.... 7D... 5Dmk2.... 7D.... 5Dmk2.....

I think i am now going for the 7D.

The reason for this is mainly what I use the cam for and how i use it.

7D
Auto focus system looks amazin'
Inbuilt wireless
I am used to crop and how it works with my lenses
far cheaper than the 5Dmk2
Faster fps
would not have to buy a 15mm Fish, as think 8mm on the FF would be too much
would not have to get a new f1.4 lens

5D mk2
Full frame
Far better ISO/noise
my 16-35L would work still

So all in all for what i use the cam for - night club stuff - i dont think i can justify spending the extra £500+ and the lens changes

I think I would get more use out of the focus stuff and the fps rather than the ISO stuff. That said the ISO/noise on the 7D is still far better than my current 40D.

Correct choice?

Re: New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

Difficult one... The high ISO capability of the 5D2 would definitely help, but so would the focussing of the 7D.

If you're not printing out big posters then I'm sure the high ISO performance of the 7D will be fine, but a used 1D3 might also be worth a look.

Re: New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

The 5d mkii is amazing in low light. I have used it for filming in low light conditions and even with the ISO @ 1600 / 2000 it still looked pretty stunning (with only little noise) whereas I think the 7d would've struggled.

The 7D looks good, but given the choice, I'd wouldn't swap even with the hefty price difference.

Re: New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

I have both cameras and they are both excellent cameras.
If ultimate picture quality is your aim with low noise, and you don't need the long reach or high frames per second, then I'd strongly recommend the 5D Mark II. If you want a cropped sensor or high frame rate, then the 7D is definitely the best cropped camera in the Canon range.

I think you would be happy with either. If I had to pick only one camera, I would keep the 5D Mark II without hesitation.

Re: New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

I had same decision to make recently and went for the 7D as I tend to do more Wildlife where the improved AF and reach were important to me. I am very happy with the choice and teh pics I have got so far.

Saying all that from your requirements it looks like the 5D might be better with the better IQ and low light handling (7D is good but not as good). Not sure that the improved AF would be so beneficial for night club stuff.

I also thought that the price diff between the two was not so large, or?

you wanna make sure where your buying from isn't an import. I didn't realise the 5d's were available at £1750 so may be worth double checking.

For night club work, the 5D Mark II is the only realistic option, so the choice seems clear imo.

Re: New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

The 7D does very usable ISO 3200 so it will be fine, BUT the 5D is definatly better for low light/high ISO.

Saying that you can use the 7D's flash commander mode and an offboard flash instead of the addon on the 5D..:D

I'm going for the 7D, would love a 5D but I dont shoot high ISO a lot and I do shoot some sports, but maily landscapes, but the price of moving to a FF lens set is too much (alongside the 7D's gardgets).

Re: New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

if you are doing sports and wildlife then the 7D. For fashion, landscape, portraits etc then I'd for the 5D mk2

remember on full frame a 50mm f/1.4 would be the equiv of your sigma.

Re: New cam - 7D / 5D mk2

I myself am caught in difficult decision. I bought both the 5D Mark II and the 7d...and guess what...I know absolutly nothing about photography...kind of a spur of the moment purchase...impulse buy...question is I have till tomorrow to return one of them ...the 7D and a week to return the 5D Mark II - if money was not an issue would it be crazy for me to keep both or which one should I return. I can afford both but just want to sit with 2 cameras that are nearly the same. Please educate me. Return one or keep both?

I was told that the 5D Mark II is King....and then came the
7D ....I was also adviced that each completes the other.

Lovely situation to be in, I would love to own both (I have 7D) but as an enthusiastic amateur only I don't think I could justify having both. I think it largely depends on how seriously you intend on taking your photography.

I also thinking having two will only confuse you during the already steep learning curve.

Also, you have to remember that to get the best out of both of these cameras and use full range of possibilities you really need to drop some serious money on lenses as well.

I would return one (based on what you most likely will photgraph) and spend extra money on decent glass.

A year down the line when you actually know what you want to photograph (if anything) then you make a decision on getting second body or upgrading existing.

Well love the 5dmk2.

Depends what you are going to use it for. With my stuff being night club work the iso and the 'wideness' from the FF make me think i have made the correct call.

I was gutted when Canon didn't release the 60D and released the 7D instead.

For me the issue with the 7D is its iso noise performance. At low iso (say 100-400) I understand it is nothing special given the price point of the camera and at high iso its bettered by the 5D2.

I want better iso performance than my 450D offers but am just not quite ready for FF yet, so I'm waiting to see what the 60D brings when it eventually gets released. If that is still no good then I will treat myself to a 5D2, unless a 5D3 is then on the horizon.

Cheers,

John

Pretty sure the 7D will blow the 450D out of the water for IQ, less overall noise and a lot more detail, but this will only (at low ISO) realy be apparent if you print big anyhow - otherwise you probably wont notice.

I expect (as per my own tests) the 7D will get me at least 2 more usable stops of high ISO over my 350d - and that with a lot more detail too. Honestly 3200 is as good as my iso 800.

Its no 5DmkII but its damned close in anything but bad light unless your printing huge.

also depends how post editing you want to do. I find can do so much more with the pics from the 5dmk2 rather than the 40d.

But the 7d looks like a great cam

I totally agree and I think the 7D is a huge improvement overall over the 50D too. I just think that if they had made the 7D with just 14MP or thereabouts the noise performance may have matched or bettered the 5D2, and that would have made an absolute killer camera for me. That's why I'm waiting for the 60D to see what it brings. I will then decide 60D or 5D2.

Cheers,

John

I dont think it does, I think noise perfomance is mostly down to the area of the sensor now rather than number of pixels.
