Re: Filters for d5000....

Hi Andy,

You don't buy filters to fit a camera, you buy them to fit the lenses you use. You will need to find out what size filter thread the lens(es) in question will need.

Are you considering screw-in filters or a slot-in filter system?

Hope this helps,

Steve

Re: Filters for d5000....

Hi Andy,

Good choice on the camera.

The standard kit lens is the 18-55 VR which has a 52mm filter thread. If you go for the next kit lens up in the Nikon hierarchy, the 18-105 VR (usually another £150 or so) that has a 67mm filter thread, which is a good uniform filter size for Nikon's more popular lenses should you wish to upgrade in the future.

There are opposing schools of thought on protective filters for your lenses, some people swear by them, I for one, have never used them. Also consider that a cheaper UV/protective filter can degrade picture quality. If you look after the lens, keep the cap on when not in use and use the lens hood, you shouldn't have a problem. I would get a circular polariser filter (the Hoya Pro1 is good and comparatively cheap in 52mm size), they help by increasing contrast in skies, reducing glare/reflections, and can add extra 'pop' to your photos.

Btw, whatever you do, don't get filters from Jessops, they charge way OTT, far cheaper on-line.

Cheers, Simon.

Everyone will have their own preference. Personally, I just use the lens hood and have only ever used a filter when a shot needs it (like a Neutral Density filter for example).
