85mm f1.4 on D700 or 50mm f1.4 on D300

Hi everybody,

I own a D700 and had been thinking of getting the Nikon 85mm f1.4 D but at £880 its a lot of dough.

I could get a D300 and use my 50mm f1.4 which would be equivalent to a 75mm f1.4 using the 1.5 crop factor of the DX sensor.

I'd also have a second body for non-repeatibe events.

Does my logic make sense? Have I missed something? Am I miss-understanding focal lengths, DOF and crop factors.

Any feed back would be greatly appreciated

Ta

Litch

Can't fault your maths. As an owner of both a 50 and 85 1.4 there is little between them when it comes to IQ. The 85 is quite a bit bigger and heavier than the 50 and those factors maybe something else you want to consider if you will be lugging two cameras around.

Having owned both a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 and a Nikon 85mm f/1.4 with a D700 (now a D300), the 85mm really comes into its own on Full-Frame IMO. Those two focal lengths are lovely on FF....personally I'd go for the lens rather than the 2nd body.

Firstly thanks for the responses chaps

I decide to go with the lens purchase in the end.

My rational was that good glass last a lot longer that a body.

The lens arrived yesturday, thanks to warehouse express's uber quick delivery

There's a few quick shots on my flickr stream if anyones interested.

Thanks again,

Litch

Seems to be less depreciation as well, a good choice imo.
