Look at a Nikon 2100 as 1 option.

Cool

I Have been looking into digital cameras myself and for £261 here (just above your price) it seem the Canon A80 is a good model although only 3 * zoom, But is 3.9 mega pixels.

Review here.

The A80 is the dogs, and you can buy a telephoto lense for it

I recently bought a Canon A70 for about £240 from amazon.co.uk, within a few quid of the cheapest net price I could find.

Relatively fast auto-focus, relatively fast 1/2 per sec cycle time and a very fast 2fps burst mode. Priority (semi-manual) and Portrait modes work very well for photographing our nipper in various lighting. Incredible battery life of about 300+ shots with flash.

640x480 15fps MJPEG progressive video and audio is a nice bonus for taking several up to 30secs moving clips.

cheers,
Rob.
