Nikon/Canon warranty on 2nd hand equipment

Does anyone know how Nikon / Canon operate their warranty policy in practice ?

I'm looking at purchasing some expensive kit and want to save some money, but I would also would want some fallback if it all went pear shaped.

So if a seller says a D700 or 5DMkII was purchased 9 months ago, but they never registered it, would the next owner be able to register it?

I know these warranties are not strictly transferable.

Assume the gear was purchased in the UK and not a grey import.

Are third party warranties any good ?

Thanks

Have you emailed the manufacturer(s) in the UK? They would know . . . we might speculate to know. Ask Canikon UK. Assume nothing! If you provide the serial number(s) to them, they ought to know if it/they was/were sold via a UK retailer, though that may not be an issue.

Takes 30 seconds to draft and send an email. Manufacturers operate different warranty policies, so check with them first.

Re: Nikon/Canon warranty on 2nd hand equipment

From a Nikon perspective you'd get a year warranty in this box from the date it was sold. If you register a Nikon within 30 day's of purchase you get another year on top. Basically somethings not right if the 9 month old D700 doesn't have another 15 month's warranty left on it imo, you don't spend £1700 on a camera and not bother to qualify it for a two year warranty.

With Nikon you get a year from the date you bought the camera ( date on receipt or invoice which you might have to produce in the event of a claim) and a year on top from a company called Homeserve, providing the camera was supplied by Nikon Uk ( ie not a grey import). The warranty is not transferrable and only applies to the original owner.

Re: Nikon/Canon warranty on 2nd hand equipment

Thanks for confirming guys
If I do buy 2ndhand gear I'll still need to mitigate against breakdowns, I've found a few camera insurance companies that cover theft and accidental damage. Are there any reliable extended warranty companies that covers kit like this ?

Re: Nikon/Canon warranty on 2nd hand equipment

Most warranties only cover the original owner. However, if you've got all the paper and receipts from the original purchase if it was in the UK I wouldn't see an issue in kit not still being covered. At the end of the day all they want to see is a valid proof of purchase, they're not going to do an identity check on you.

For all they know the kit was purchased by someone else as a birthday gift for you so when people say the warranty isn't transferable that's true in a sense but as long as you have the original receipts then take it with a pinch of salt.....
