Is there any new professional Nikon D-SLR due out ?

I'm considering saving, or planning to finance a professional level digital SLR camera, something more pro-level than the new D300s, but I can't afford the new D3x

Perhaps a replacement for the D700, which is getting old now.

Is there are recent news I may have missed?

This thread is worth a look :

I think we'll see a D700x before the end of the year myself although I don't think it will be as cheap as the canon 5d Mk 2.

Your welcome. I'm stuck myself with Nikons offerings currently as it's only worth me considering a new camera if it offers 20+ megapixels.

Re: Is there any new professional Nikon D-SLR due out ?

I agree, there isn't really the choice at the moment for high end Nikons as the D3X is totally stupid price, the D700 is already a year old and the D300s is not a full frame FX camera.

I used always swear by Canon EOS film cameras, owning a Canon EOS 1N-HS a few years ago, but I don't really like Canon's digital camera and like the build quality of Nikons.

The D700 has been out for just over a year. Hardly getting old...

Re: Is there any new professional Nikon D-SLR due out ?

What do you intend to shoot? Do you shoot more wide angle or telephoto? Do you need low light performance or not?

If the D300 doesn't do it for you then the D700 or D3 are the obvious choice. It all depends on what you shoot really...personally I think the current D300/700/D3 line up is very good indeed.

I got a D300 a backup to the D3 and it is very good and can hold it's own against the bigger brother quite well.

The weak area for me with regards Nikon is landscape photography. We could I feel do with a new 17-35 2.8 lens to arrive like the 24-70 2.8 and 14-24 2.8 we've already got and we need an affordable 20+ megapixel camera.

Re: Is there any new professional Nikon D-SLR due out ?

Essentially I'm looking for a pro or semi-pro level digital SLR that has full manual control, a good 3 inch LCD, excellent pro build quality and a high megapixel resolution. Ideally with a full-frame sensor and the ability to fit a power boost grip or similar for vertical shooting. I used to shoot mainly on 6x7cm film for landscapes.

Something like a Canon EOS 5D Mark II / Nikon D700 or similar. I like the choices of Canon EF lenses and not that similar with Nikon lenses. I am into landscapes, nature/macro mainly.

My ideal lens line-up would be 17-35 f/2.8, 100mm f2.8 macro, 24-70mm f2.8, (or 28-200mm perhaps), 70-200mm f/2.8 or similar.

I think realistically a D700 would be the most I could afford as I'm not professional and whilst I would love the Nikon D3X, that is silly money for me.

I'm happy to wait and not rush into any purchase.

This is what I'm into as well mostly and the canon 5d mk 2 simply looks a better option to me at the moment. Going to wait and see on the price of the D700x when it arrives and then consider my options.

Re: Is there any new professional Nikon D-SLR due out ?

It is worth reading what Thom (Bytom.com) has to say regarding the difference between the D3 and D3X.

More pixels means more densely packed sensor which means less dynamic range and poorer high ISO capability. I recently bought a D700 rather than waiting for a D700x because I thought the D700x may be a lot more money (maybe £3000) and although you can get better images with the higher spec sensor, you have to be a lot more precise about using the higher res camera to get the best results. The lower spec D3 is a lot more forgiving than the D3X and I assume the same attributes will apply to the D700x when compared to a D700.

A lot of people with D3 and D3X still prefer use the D3 for many situations. For example see dpreview.com and flickr. The sensor for the D3 and D700 is arguable in the "sweet spot" for optimum performance. Going for a higher res sensor will add more resolution, but for many everyday photo scenarios the D3/D700 will produce better looking results.
