Lightweight, compact tripod?

I'm looking for a fairly lightweight and compact tripod and head combo which I can chuck in a flight bag for traveling or which is not too heavy strapped to a back-pack when off walking.

I'm not wanting to spend a fortune, but it needs to be sturdy enough to support my 40D with 70-200 F4 L attached.

Any recommendations?

Re: Lightweight, compact tripod?

That's a reasonably heavy combo for a lightweight travel tripod to handle! How much are you looking to spend?

There's the Manfrotto Modo Maxi, which folds down to a pretty small size, and is reasonably sturdy, but it has a pistol grip type head which may sag under the weight.

Does it need to be full size, or can it be very small? If you want something full-size, you might have to be thinking about a carbon fibre tripod. You can usually get 2 out of 3 from a tripod:

Light
Cheap
Sturdy

You chose which 2!

Interested in the same thing, although my kit is smaller.

What is this like just for a 'one trip' tripod?

Re: Lightweight, compact tripod?

What about a monopod? (sorry don't want to divert the thread) I am wondering how effective one might be myself...

Re: Lightweight, compact tripod?

I've got a manfrotto monopod and whilst it's OK for a quick snap with a quick small zoom lense, I find it not quite stable enough for distance snapping.

OK, so compact size collapsed and able to support say 8kg-10kg in weight. You aint gonna want some cheapo £25.00 effort then. You haven't stated a budget either.

Take a peaky poo at this. Here's what you do . . . .

Sign up to the TalkPhotography forum. Call the company (assuming this is for you) and tell them you're a TP member and hey-presto . . . 10% off the purchase price. Sorted.

It's the new 4 section version and the latest in their inventory, so collapses to a more compact size than the 3 section variant. I have the 3 section version with the same ballhead. It's exceptional quality.

Others on this forum also have the same tripod/ballhead combo as myself, and we think it's pretty darned good and belies it's lowly price tag.

Re: Lightweight, compact tripod?

Guess I am asking quite a lot. I stated the 70-200 as this is the heaviest set-up which I may wish to use, although most of the time it'll be the same 40D, but with a smaller zoom lens.

I haven't stated budget as I'm keen to see what suggestions people come up with without it, but as I said, I don't wish to spend a fortune.

I guess if I'm after lightweight and compact then it may necessitate compromise elsewhere. I'd hate to be traveling and be faced with the perfect shot but for the lack of tripod having left it at home due to size/weight.
