Question A Visit To London Village - Where To Expose ?

I'm going to London Village in just over a week for 4 nights and I wondered if anyone can give me any advice where to take photos, tourist and cool locations.

Most of the places either don't allow photography (Cathedrals) or don't allow tripods (Museums).
So I guess I'll be only using a tripod in the evening and night.
I'm staying by Tower Bridge as part of the coach tour.

I like architecture and landscapes, so anything involving those 2 would be appreciated.

Part of the tour goes to Windsor Castle and Greenwich, but they don't allow photography, so I'll skip that tour.

Are there any interesting public buildings, railway stations that allow photography or places to see when they're lit up at night.

Do they allow photography at Docklands/Canary Wharf station for example ?

I'm not familiar with the London Subway, if you bought one ticket, can you travel anywhere, through interconnecting station until you reach your destinations and can you also buy a "pass" for unlimited type travel over a period of days ?

Thanks for any information
I don't have to eat jellied eels when I visit do I ?

No, but apparently you need to use rhyming verse and wear a vest covered in buttons.

Hello there

Get yourself an Oyster card best way to travel on the tube.

South bank is good.

From Westminster Bridge to Tower Bridge. Loads of place to see there.

Cheers Holo

Re: A Visit To London Village - Where To Expose ?

I hope you will not be exposing anywhere. We have enough problems here in the sunny south without you northeners coming down and frightening the horses

St Pancras is the most impressive station IMHO

Windsor and the other Royal places do allow photography outside, the restrictions only apply to inside certain parts (depending on which castle you go to. I found Hampton Court to be a tog friendly place.

Harrods (a big grocery shop) looks quite impressive at night.

Wembley stadium maybe worth checking out and there is a very impressive temple Welcome to BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London (Neasden Temple)

For interesting buildings, how about the massive green houses at Kew Gardens?

That's about all I can think of at the moment. Pity I won't be in town when you are (I off on my hols from next Thursday).

I did try to add "Myself" to the subject title, but it wouldn't let me
Is it possible to see the old staircase and the old interior at St Pancras ?
The Temple looks impressive (shame no photography inside) and I remember your photos from Hampton Court.
I'll check at the info on Wembley and Kew.
I'm not sure how easy they are to get too, I don't want to use the buses, because I've no idea if they are going in the right direction and I wouldn't know which stop to get off at, I'd go my Subway I guess.
I'm there from the 17th to 21st

All things considered I think Kew is your best bet and you can get there on the Underground (the green line aka District) The station is about a 5 minute walk from the entrance. You could also get into Richmond for some shots of the Thames there either from the bank or at the top of Richmond Hill

Have you never been above the bottom floor? Not what I would call Harrods. More of a big department store.

Re: A Visit To London Village - Where To Expose ?

I'd recommend getting one of the hop-on hop-off bus tour tickets for your first day. They're valid for 24 hours, and is a great way of getting a feel of the whole city.

The Original London Sightseeing Tour:

If you see something you like the look of, just hop off at the nearest stop, take a few shots, and the next one is along in 15 mins.

You can get a 1 day off peak travel card for underground zones 1-4 (which covers out to Kew I believe) for about £7 I think.

The museums are camera friendly (no tripods though as you say).
Kew is a good choice

Re: A Visit To London Village - Where To Expose ?

Unless I missed it, nobody's mentioned the London Eye. Booking ahead means less queuing, but you're a bit at the mercy of the weather. Without booking, the queue is long, but it moves quite fast. A must-do, imo.

St Pauls Cathedral is quite difficult to photo unless you have a very wide lens, because it's a bit hemmed in. Best to include the Dome in a skyline view.

Hyde Park can give some nice shots of lots of greenery with a city skyline.

The best views of London (from Ground Level) are from the Thames Bridges and the Embankment, especially the South Bank. Walk all the way along from Westminster Bridge as far as your legs will stand it towards Tower Bridge. The Hungerford Foot Bridges at Waterloo give good views up & down stream.

Definitely take your camera to Windsor.

Have a nice trip.

If you want great pics of the London skyline for free go to the cafe on the top of the Tate Modern.

Re: A Visit To London Village - Where To Expose ?

Can anyone tell me if it's possible to take photo inside St Mary Axe - The Gherkin (either in the lobby or in the restaurant at the top) and at Canary Wharf Station ?
And has anyone been inside the old Daily Express building on Fleet Street to take pictures of the lobby ceiling ?

On the Subway system, how do you which direction the train will be going it ?
Are they called clockwise, anticlockwise or something like Westbound or Eastbound etc ?

Thanks

Re: A Visit To London Village - Where To Expose ?

As far as the tube goes, it depends which line you're on but they're generally described as eastbound/westbound/northbound/southbound as appropriate. The station platforms will also have signs showing where the line goes from that station and there are signs showing where the next train terminates.

It's really nothing to worry about and is simple to follow - the only real complications are the different Northern line branches but the maps indicate this clearly.

Re: A Visit To London Village - Where To Expose ?

Unless things have changed, you can only get to the Bar in the Gherkin by being a member or a guest of one. The security tends to be tight and whilst there are no official rules posted about photos inside the lobby I expect you would be chased out.

May be worth looking at Vertigo 42 instead as it is open to the public (subject to a reservation) and is at the top of Tower 42 (aka Natwest Tower) and is the tallest building. Ideally you want to get a table on the south side to get views of the river and the more iconic buildings but these tend to be harder to get.

As per everyone elses suggestion.... the Southbank is always good
