Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM

Has anyone got or seen the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5.

I have no idea if its new or not, but ive just seen it for sale on import.
Is it a new lens ?

Is it any good as the original 10-20 is brilliant and now tih f/3.5 throughout woudl make it an essential lens ... although RRP is nearly double at £630.

Its actually very new, don't even think its officially available in the UK, from what I can recall its as good as the old one, but at double the cost!

AFIK the new one is £50-100 more RRP than the old one is all?

For me I hardly ever shoot mine at anything other than f8...

Yep - SRRP £649 vs £549 for the slower version.

Will you be using it at f3.5 though? I never use mine below f8 either and wouldn't bother spending more on the f3.5.

From the MTF chart the new one is poorer but thats at f3.5 vs f4.5, hard to say what like for like will be - and the rest (sharpness stopped down and CA etc) the f3.5 uses more exotic elements.

Hi,

another reason it's dearer apart from the F3.5 is the HSM motor with allows full time manual AF and also prevents the focus ring from 'grabbing' your hand when holding it, it will also be quieter. It is now available in Canon fit which is pretty recent too.

Im most interested in this lens for indoor work, but not sure an extra stop is going to be troo much of a leap from f/4.

the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 EX DC HSM is new but I wouldn't get excited about it if the old one is anything to go by!

if it's for indoor work i'd look at the tokina 11-16 2.8

i know there are some good sigma 10-20 lenses out there but they are few and far between. took me 3 copies to get a satisfactory one. changed it for the canon 10-22 in the end which was much sharper

Thats interesting.
The tokina is a cracker but a bit more than the 10-20, guess you get what you pay for!!

Just checked W.E for the prices on these :

Sigma 10-20 f/4-5/6 - £380
Tokina 11-16 f/2.8 - £480
Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 - £580
Canon 10-22 f3.5-4.5 - £650

Virtually £100 increments each time.
Tokina looks the best when seeing those prices as 2.8 would be very useful.

You might look at the Tokina 12-24mm as well if you can cope with losing a mm or two (at the wide end). Constant F4 and build quality that is closer to 'L' than to standard Canon. It was my favourite lens with a crop (40D). I'm not convinced that the 17-40L I have now, used FF is any better (though of course YMMV).

I know there been a few QC issues with the f/4-5.6 but isn't that sorted now? Most of the time all you hear is praise from people who have them.

Uh the old 10-20 is HSM too , same deal.

And its pretty stunning at f8, which is where I normaly shoot it. And I have an early one.

It's usually the people with issues who are the most vocal though, you find that with most stuff.

Eitherway, glad you got a good one in the end. I'm definitely going to pick one up myself once I have the cash to spare
