70-200f2.8L IS + complete novice /shakes head.

Any UV or skylite filter at what 77mm(?) will do , but to be honest get a good un or you've wasted £1500 on a nice lens.

Wow, what a lens! Great choice.

I usually buy the Hoya Pro ones for mine. I would never buy a lens worth so much to then scrimp and save on a uv / protective filter.

Sorry!

Kind regards

Sarah

Before I open a can of worms this is my take on the UV filter and protecting the lens.

I would never dream of putting a UV filter in front of a lens, never mind one as good as this.

Why would you pay all that money on such a good bit of glass then stick a cheap filer on it.
In my opinion the lens hood is good enough for protection.

Funny enough just been stop by a bloke on the street and he has just brought a 40d and asked me how I was getting on with it. He was amazed that I don't use a uv filter ( at the time had the 50mm on) told him why I never used one and the 50 mm is the only lens I don't have a hood for.

I know other people swear by them, and have even read that you should use then in mags. Just not for me.

Cheers Holo

A 'protection' filter will only degrade the image the question is by how much.

Sometimes some filters are warrented (CPL, ND, grads etc), I dont use filters purely for protection (in the main, I often use one at the beach shootin surfing etc).

Re: filter for canon 70-200 2.8l is lens.

hi alan, that was my plan to start with. i was looking on ebay. when i noticed a 70-200mm 2.8 l which the bidding had 1 day to run. i asked the owner a few questions. he was selling all his canon gear as he was changing over to nikon. he told me where he lived which was only 30miles from where i lived. and i knew the area was really nice. so i waited till the last 5 minutes before putting my bid in. i won the bid. and the price was really good. so i went to collect it at his house. he let me try it out. i was very pleased with it and the price i paid. i would not bid on any thing on ebay if i could not go and collect the item. so thats how i come to have the 2.8 lens. maybe i was a little bit silly getting the 2.8 first as i am a complete novice. but i could always sell it and get my money back or a lot more, as the lens is in mint condition. i wish there was some body local to me who could so help me with the basics on photography. thats the reason i joined the forum. so i can get some help of the likes of your good self and all the other experts. kind regards. geoff. take care alan.

DO NOT get rid of that lens

The reason i ask was i found it abit strange that someone who is starting out in the world of photography has payed out £1200+ for that lens and not gone for the f4 at £300+.Lucky you if you got it for a good price.

In the end alot of peeps(like myself) sell the f4 and upgrade to the f2.8, you have just missed that gap .

If i was you, go over to a forum called Canon Digital Photography Forums - Powered by vBulletin , which is dedecated to Canon only, and have a good read. What ever you want to know just type it in the search.

Oh and you have never said what cam body you are using ?.
