This is a digital photography slot i know but some one may know what i want to know, i have around 600 126 mm instamatic slides and some negatives that i cant find at present from 1966 to around 1973, i have been thinking of puting them all on video possibly dvd or blu ray,what i want to know is how much resolution this format had i know it was more than 110mm mm film had,i think a lot of the resolution threshold was with the tiny fixed lens,they look quite sharp in a viewer but on hd tv is another thing so if anyone knows the film resolution i would be grateful.google has told me bits but not the actual question.

Hmmm. that question doesn't really work.

Film is an analogue recording medium. Essentially the 'resolution' is only restricted by the quality of the lens and the chemical coating on the film.

126 format was just over an inch square, i have most of mine scanned to give 3.5MP (from mounted slides) to 4MP images( from negative strips). You can scan at higher resolutions of course, but the quality of my old film didn't justify going higher.

Thanks , i am not sure but if you have yours scanned at 3.5 to 4mp from negative strips which i suppose have the same image resolution as slides i presume that is higher than hd video,i think the quality of the shots may determin the resolution more than the film.

That was interesting thanks but it was refering to 35mm film, 126mm can not match 35mm surely and formats such as 110 mm were lower still, its like movie film super 8 does not have the resolution as 16mm or 16mm as much as 35mm.

Also i should have stated i will be using a film transfer adaptor attached to my hd prosumer cam when i get the correct lens rings so i am governed by the cams performance which is why i basicaly asked 126mm resolution.Also some of the 126 prints i have dot look any sharper than prints i can take from playback video.

126 negatives are square (about 28mm on each side when mounted) so are approx 90% the area of a 35mm negative. Therefore you'd expect that the images contain similar amount of information to a typical 35mm negative (assuming similar emulsion and optical quality to a 35mm camera system) .

That might be a good starting point when considering your scan resolution and resulting scan file size.

From recollection mounted 126 film was just over 25mm square, on the strips it's 28mm square, so depth wise you have at least a match for 35mm film.
In my case the film hadn't been well looked after, so i drew a line at 4MP, if you have good film i'm sure you'll be able to go higher.
