Hi

I have just bought a Nikon D40 and the standard lens is ok, but need a zoom. Any recommendations ?

I was looking at the Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6 G AF-S DX VR IF-ED, but what about Tamron, Sigma etc

The Nikon 18-200 VR.

Top quality, good range from wide to telephoto, very handy for travel and everday use, it provides a solid foundation to start with.

55-200VR or 70-300VR. Unless the OP really needs an all in one solution, the 70-300VR would be far better value (in fact you can get an 18-55VR+70-300VR for the same money as an 18-200VR)

I use the Sigma 70-300 APO DG HSM lens which I recommend, for around £160

Yep . Only downside is the lack of VR. On the plus side, you have a semi-macro mode.

Definitely 70-300VR - great lens. In my opinion the VR is a must with this range.

The Nikon 55-200mm VR if money is tight or the Nikon 70-300 VR if it is not.

They are both good lenses and I agree that VR is very useful on this range.
