Canon 24-105 F4 L on a 450D would you?

I'm new to this part of the A/V forums so go easy on me. I've Had a 450D for about nine months and just recently went on a course which has just motivated me more with my Photography.

I have the kit lens 18-55 and i bought a EF-S 55-250 F4-5.6. The 55-250 is very good and i'm happy with it but the 18-55 has always been a bit soft and some of the time slightly out of focus when it shouldn't be.

So i need an upgrade I've been thinking about the future and where i want to go with my photography and although the 24-105 isn't best suited to the 450D when i upgrade my body in a year or so it will be bang on. I don't see the point of another EF-S lens because when i upgrade my body Midrange DSLR's will propably be using full format sensors.

So would you?

Re: Canon 24-105 F4 L on a 450D would you?

I'm no expert, but i have the 24-105 on my 40D, i love it, it's one of my most used lenses.
I dont often go really wide so it's good enough for me.
Lets put it this way, if i go out and pick up my camera, not knowing quite what i plan to photograph, then the 24-105 is my lens of choice.

This pic..Clicky is a recent one, it just picks up colour wonderfully.

If you are planning to go FF anytime in the future i think this is a wise investment.

I have the 24-105 on a 450D and it is fantastic. Money on good lenses is rarely wasted.

I would keep the kit lens though because 24 is not wide enough.

Thanks guy's. I just needed that little push over the edge it's a lot of money. The good thing is if i decide it's not for me Ebay prices are stupid at the moment so i will get most of my money back. I understand L's are good lenses but i was shocked at the used prices!

Re: Canon 24-105 F4 L on a 450D would you?

I wouldn't discount some of the EF-S lenses, just cause you reckon midrange bodies in future will be full frame. I'm not so sure. It's a subject that's been debated for a long time. All the major manufacturers have made a massive investment in APS-C and have a huge user base way beyond consumer/entry level and I don't think the introduction of any of the newer FF models suggests that FF will be a feature of any midrange bodies for some time. For example, currently you couldn't go FF for less than £1500 at least.
So unless you see yourself spending that kind of money on a body upgrade in future, then get the 24-105 because it stands up better than others you're considering. And specifically think about losing the wide end on a crop body. I used a 28-105 that I loved when I was using film, but however good a lens it was (and certainly better than the old 18-55 my 30D came with), once I got the 30D it just wasn't wide enough for general use.
For 24-105 money, I'd really think about the 17-55 IS. Less reach but a stop faster and crucially gives you the wide end.

Re: Canon 24-105 F4 L on a 450D would you?

I can see a Full frame camera in the future if i buy some more decent glass £1500 for a body seems relatively cheap

I've had a play with my current lenses set between 24-105 and 24 seems reasonably wide. I've had a look through some of my previous images in lightroom and it's very rare to find an image below 22mm.

I'm going to go for it

Dont forget if you do go FF 24mm will appear even wider due to the 1.6x fovcf of the APS-C sensor

Re: Canon 24-105 F4 L on a 450D would you?

Of course, I think one of the reasons the 24-105 isn't best suited to the 4/3 sensors is that 24mm = 38mm so it's not very wide. I think i will need to fill the hole below this lens at some point for truely wide.

Anyway i've splashed the cash, UK, brand new, only £50 more than i saw one go on Ebay yesterday used. Should be here Tuesday.

can anybody recommend a good place to get cheap Hoya filters?

That's what I did when I decided to get the 24-105 for my 40d. About 5% off my images were towards the wide end and alot was towards the telephoto part of my old lens. I really like this lens, and it's on my 40d most of the time. My 50 is the only reason I take it off.

Anyway, enjoy your purchase. The first thing that hit me after the build quality was how cool having IS was

Re: Canon 24-105 F4 L on a 450D would you?

Not sure if anybody will be still interested in this thread but i managed to get out last weekend with my new lens, week before last was a nigtmare because of the weather.

Here's some of the pictures I took. The lens is really nice very fast focusing fantastic DOF all the shots were hand held, wish i'd had a tripod for the bees

I wasn't that happy with the results not because of the lens i just wasn't thinking.

I'm curious to know. As a Sony/Minolta (Sonolta) user who has a Minolta 24-105mm (D) f/3.5-4.5, how much does your Canon variant 'fetch or demand'?

On 'our' system, it averages circa £150.00 for a decent used copy (it's full frame with ADI 8 pin connectors). The re-badged Sony version commands £400.00 or thereabouts new.
