I decided the 40D would be enough. Having a look at the side by side comparison of the 400D, 40D and 50D, the thing that stands out is that the 40D would be a major upgrade in the handling/features over your 400D, but offers no improvement in resolution. The 50D seems to offer very little improvement in features over the 40D, but obv has more pixels. It depends I suppose if your need to upgrade is based on feeling you don't have the resolution you need or whether the camera doesn't operate how you'd like.
Reading the review at dpreview, it seems that one of the selling points of the 50D was meant to be high ISO performance as it offers 6400 and 12800 over the 40D, but they appear so unuseable that there may not be much of a benefit to be enjoyed. In fact, when they compare it to the 40D, at 800, 1600 and 3200, the 40D appears to perform better due to the reduced MP density.
As an 8Mp user who is still pretty happy with the resolution and detail of the pics that produces (at the sizes I use anyway), I doubt I'd truly appreciate the 15Mp of the 50D and over the 40D the only feature it offers that I'd be interested in is the focus micro adjustment. Not worth the £200-£300 extra over the 40D. For me at least. |
I have the 30
and 40D and agree with all you say. the 40D is a nicer camera but I dont realy yearn for the 40 when using the 30D.
That extra 1/2 inch in the LCD is very nice though

. it also clicks rather " more quietly" and seema little faster! but both are quality kit (I would say that though

)
There is more but in practical use they are like optional extras.. IMHO
Also despite a similar layout , the settings are not identical by default
Im not dismissing the capacities of the 50D but really do not lust for it.. at all
Ironically the 40D as become costlier , not cheaper as it was arond the tie of the 450D launch
The 50D is meant to coexist with and not replace it it seems
Incidentally the side by side comparisons would suggest the 400D is better than the 30D and the 450 better the 40D and in truth that would be misleading
And now there is the 500D

!!
What may also be borne in mind is that if you have fast glass you will enjoy them better with th XXD seiries .
Although identical on paper the AF really is much faster and more accurate than with the 400D
