Branded Lenses

Have noticed quite a few people posting with Tamron and sigma lenses, may sound strange but are these as good or better then the "branded" lenses for any one camera? Is it just price that dictates to people or do you prefer the aftermarket ones to the ones made by your camera manufacturer?

Re: Branded Lenses

Mostly price I would say, it's rare for a 3rd party lens to be better than the own manufacturers lens from my experience. A lens like the tamron 17-50 2.8 is popular because to get the equivalent say Nikon brand lens would set you back another £600

Re: Branded Lenses

Rare but it does happen. The Sigma 50mm F1.4 is very highly though of. Also, the off-brands also make several lenses that the big companies just don't make at all. Nikon don't make a 120-300mm F2.8 lens so if you want something like that, off-brand is your only choice.
