Spring is here - events/places to go?

So spring is here, the clocks have gone forwards, and I've spent several months without once putting my camera in my hand

So its time to dust it off and get going again.

Lets list upcoming events or good places to visit on a day out with the camera. I'll start by not listing anything - I just want to see what you guys suggest so I can follow them

Ahoy!

Well, the Bournemouth Air Festival will be in town later this year. You could poodle down the M4/A303 and take in a meet or two @ Thruxton.

What are you after shooting? You could put your anorak on and go shoot some aircraft @ LHR (not very far away from you). T5 must make a nice subject at night!

How about a walk along the Embankment? Always stuff happening along there I would guess.

Re: Spring is here - events/places to go?

might try a day out in London - easy enough to get to. T5 might be interesting too - done some flyover shots before, but would like to scout out some decent takeoff/landing areas west of LHR too.

Should try Windsor too - done the castle to death but might try some of the smaller streets, maybe some candid too.

Thruxton is a definite if I can get time to go down there. Did it before and enjoyed it a lot. Might need another long lens though - sold my 100-400 last year and now the prices have shot up!

Re: Spring is here - events/places to go?

I know my last post was tounge in cheek

but
seriously,
As I Work in Berks ( Slough ,Ascot, Burnham ,Maidenhead) but ( live in Hillingdon) I sometimes think whist en-route Ascot/ Bracknell from Slough of any Photo opportunities ( apart from Legoland ) in the area
.. Is it possible that (apart from Windsor ,) familiarity is stopping you from noticing your own " backyard?
Some would describe it as a lovely area
The Embankent and South Bank are also justifiably popular (especially when the weather is good)
Holo suggested Denham to me .. Not far from you

Re: Spring is here - events/places to go?

Ahoy!

The Priory has ruins surrounding it and it also makes for a nice night shot at night (if floodlit) and does the surrounding river and down at the quayside/quomp with all the boats etc. Hengistbury Head for seascapes (on a clear day the IOW and The Needles are quite visible), get right on top of the Head where the old Coastguard Building is (it's a hike). Or, pop down to Bournemouth Flying Club at Hurn airport, book a chopper flight and take your camera and get some aerials! I did, superb fun! A bit pricey though.

Moving along towards Bournemouth/Poole will afford a whole host of opportunites, especially Poole Harbour. Maybe take a trip to Brownsea Island with a macro and wide lens. I hear it's 'quite interesting' over there. If you go to my flickr pages, you'll see some aerials and a few images from around the Town.

Also Stonehenge, Corfe Castle and Durdle Door @ Lulworth Cove. And if you're a 'steamhead', the Swanage Railway.

British Touring Car Championship weekend towards end of April @ Thruxton. Should be a great event like last year, especially when the pit lane is opened up on raceday (Sunday) for the masses to get photo's, signatures and freebie handouts etc. Get right up close and personal. Great fun on a nice day.

probably - When we lived in Brighton for several years we never went to the Pavilion! Will try and keep an open mind and look around locally too.

Never heard of Denham, will check that out.

  • Woodlands : Burnham Beeches (better in Autumn, though);
  • Landscapes: Winter Hill or (further afield) the Chiltern Ridge, such as Christmas Common, Ivinghoe Beacon, etc. See if you can photograph some red kites;
  • West Wycombe
  • Formal gardens: Cliveden (esp water garden), Savill Garden; Great Park around Virginia Water;
  • Birdlife: Jubilee River;
  • Animals: Odds Farm, Whipsnade Zoo;
  • Canals: Flight of locks & basin at Marsworth;
  • Novelty: Bekonscot
  • Oxford; Bletchley Park
  • For longer days out: Corfe Castle; Dungeness; HMS Victory; lots of NT houses in the area.
Not all free or all that close, of course.

Re: Spring is here - events/places to go?

And in an attempt to avoid a South-centric thread (), what about these:

Tall Ships (though it's likely they are at other places in the UK too)

Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Knowsley Safari Park

Oulton Park

Leeds Dragon Boat Race

Very pretty Village Denham with a 15th century church that stands on a Saxon site. Plus it had a large film studio which has been demolished.
