canon 1000d vs sony alpha 300

just making my first steps into dslr photography and have been looking at these two camera's.
any thoughts regarding good/bad points would be great.
jessops doing a good deal(i think) on the sony
£499 for camera with lens + tamron 70-300 lens + Sandisk Extreme III 4GB CompactFlash memory card.
again any thoughts would be great.

i have the 1000d and find it excellent as a first camera , i might be wrong but i am thinking the a200 is a closer comparison to the 1000d

sony good cam but i would go for the canon as for more support community and more glass
